Amid escalating tensions in the Niger Republic, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has emphasized that the path of war is not conducive to Nigeria's ongoing economic reforms. This insight was shared during a crucial meeting between President Tinubu and the US Presidential Envoy and Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs, Ambassador Molly Phee, as reported by Aguri Ngelale, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

In the meeting, President Tinubu underscored the significance of the United States' role in fostering deeper democracy within the West African sub-region, particularly through collaboration with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He highlighted that ECOWAS remains firmly dedicated to exploring every possible avenue to reinstate democracy in the Niger Republic.

"We are deeply committed to resolving the Niger situation through diplomatic means, harnessing our diplomatic tools. Protests in FUTA over death of final-year student

Protests in FUTA over death of final-year student

The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), was marked by somber protests as students gathered on Friday to mourn the untimely passing of Ayomide Akeredolu, a 500-level student of the institution. The news of Akeredolu's demise sent shockwaves through the campus, leading his fellow students to stage a demonstration in his memory.

In a poignant display of their grief, the students took to the streets, effectively barricading the bustling Akure-Ilesa highway. This demonstration, while a heartrending tribute to their departed peer, brought about significant disruption to vehicular movement. The resultant traffic congestion extended for hours, reflecting the depth of sorrow and frustration felt by the student body.

The unfortunate incident took place as Akeredolu, a well-liked figure among his peers, collapsed within his hostel in Akindeko Hall merely days before his final examinations. Rushed to the University Health Centre, his condition rapidly deteriorated, and despite the medical staff's dedicated efforts involving CPR, oxygen, and injections, Akeredolu's life could not be saved. This sudden loss catalyzed an outpouring of emotion, compelling students to rally together in protest.

A witness, recounting the events, shared, "We rushed the young man to the health centre around 8:30 pm. However, upon our arrival, a power outage occurred. Despite the medical team's vigorous attempts, which included CPR, oxygen, and injections, the power remained unavailable throughout the entire treatment process."

In response to the unfolding developments, the Director of Corporate Communication at the university, Adegbenro Adebanjo, released an official statement shedding light on the circumstances. Adebanjo clarified, "In light of certain concerns about the services offered at the University Health Centre, students engaged in a protest on Friday, August 25, 2023. It's important to note that the protest was not a direct reaction to the student's demise."

He further explained that during a meeting with the university's management, initiated at the Vice Chancellor's request, student representatives raised issues related to accessing services at the health centre. The university administration acknowledged these concerns and vowed to systematically address them. The commitment was made to consistently review and implement corrective measures to ensure student satisfaction and the seamless functioning of the health center services.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State Recognizes Four Traditional Rulers

In a significant move to preserve the authenticity and integrity of traditional leadership, Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has taken a decisive step by awarding certificates of recognition to four distinguished traditional rulers in the state. The governor personally presented the certificates to these revered monarchs during a discreet ceremony held at the Government House in Awka on a Saturday.

During the issuance of these certificates, Governor Soludo shed light on a pressing concern. He acknowledged the alarming trend of unauthorized individuals illegitimately assuming the roles of traditional rulers across various communities. To address this issue, the governor announced a strict stance going forward. Anyone caught engaging in such unauthorized practices will face severe consequences, including a potential six-month jail term.

The governor's stance on this matter was reinforced by an official statement from the press secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime. The statement unveiled the names of the traditional rulers who were formally recognized by the state through the presentation of certificates. These distinguished figures are: Igwe Mkpuorah Ngini of Isuaniocha in Awka North Local Government Area, Eze Augustine Nwangwu of Ajali in Orumba North Local Government, Igwe Alexander Azike of Igbo-ukwu, and Igwe Ikechukwu Ezeofor of Umuona, both situated in Aguata Local Government Area.

He highlighted that, moving forward, any individual who assumes the role of a monarch without proper recognition from the state government will face the legal ramifications, which include a jail term of six months as stipulated by law.

Reflecting on the historical backdrop, the governor shared insights into the positive transformation his administration has brought about in the traditional leadership landscape. Under his leadership, over 110 elections were conducted in Anambra State communities using the option A4 system, demonstrating the state's commitment to uphold the traditional rulers law. This approach has effectively replaced the earlier practice of caretaker committees, which often proved detrimental to the interests of a significant portion of the population.

Governor Soludo's resolute stance sends a clear message: the era of unrecognized individuals assuming traditional leadership roles is over. The state of Anambra is poised to uphold its rich cultural heritage through a strict adherence to the law, ensuring that authentic traditional leadership thrives while impostors face the consequences of their actions.

NDLEA busts three syndicates in Lagos, arrests drug baroness, four kingpins

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to combat drug-related crimes, with the apprehension of three major syndicates operating within Lagos State. Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, shared this commendable achievement in an official statement released on Sunday.

The operations that led to these arrests were masterfully executed by the operatives of the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of NDLEA. Babafemi's statement highlighted that these actions resulted in the dismantling of these illicit drug networks.

One of the syndicate leaders, Faith Ebele Nwankwo, was taken into custody on August 9. Her arrest followed surveillance that led to her residence at House 6, C Close, 3rd Avenue, Festac, Lagos. This came shortly after she was observed loading eight cartons of tramadol 225mg into an unmarked white Honda Pilot SUV from a warehouse at Plot 3432 Sola Akinsola Street, Divine Estate, Amuwo Odofin. The subsequent search of both locations led to the seizure of a staggering 2,750,000 pills of Tramaking, a brand of Tramadol in varying strengths, weighing 1,916 kg, along with the SUV itself.

An additional syndicate, focused on the import, export, and distribution of cocaine and Canadian Loud, was apprehended on August 4. This group was intercepted at Atlantic Nominee Estate in the Lekki-Ajah area of Lagos, where they were caught red-handed with a Toyota Highlander SUV loaded with 8.49kg of cocaine and 10.3 kg of Canadian Loud, intended for distribution. The two culprits, Urama Chinemelum Precious and Adelakun Ilelabayo Oluade, were apprehended, leading to the discovery of an extra 18 blocks of Loud, weighing 18.5kg, during a subsequent operation at the residence of Chinemelum.

The third syndicate's activities were thwarted on August 5. Udeh Vincent Ogbonna and Okonkwo Ifeanyi Uzozie were apprehended at a commercial bus terminal in Jibowu, Yaba. This duo, part of a syndicate engaged in importing, distributing, and diverting precursor chemicals used in methamphetamine production, were in the process of dispatching 25kg of ephedrine hydrochloride to the Southeast when they were apprehended.

NDLEA's tireless efforts continue to bear fruit, safeguarding communities and dismantling networks that threaten the well-being of the nation.

I warned against ‘Emilokan’ politics – Pastor Tunde Bakare

I warned against ‘Emilokan’ politics – Pastor Tunde Bakare

In a recent address to his congregation, Pastor Tunde Bakare, the serving overseer of the Citadel Global Community Church, revisited his earlier caution to Nigerians regarding the perils of what he termed "Emilokan" politics.

The term "Emilokan," translating to 'It's my turn' in Yoruba, gained prominence during President Bola Tinubu's campaign leading up to the 2023 elections. Bakare asserted that this concept embodies a trend towards authoritarianism.

The cleric reminisced, saying, "I am reminded of the alarm I raised to Nigerians back in January 2023 in my discourse titled 'Bridging the gap between politics and governance.' I had forewarned about the emergence of politics based on entitlement, the 'emilokan' variant, which could foster a presidency with imperial tendencies, sliding towards dictatorship and exhibiting intolerance towards dissension."

Bakare also shared his reservations about ECOWAS's proposed military intervention in the Republic of Niger. He elaborated, "The local support for Nigeria among Nigeriens is presently at an unprecedented low. Engaging in warfare would, therefore, be counterproductive. Although we condemn coup d'etats in West Africa, it is crucial for African leaders to deeply reflect on the prevailing situation. At this juncture, we urge Nigeria to exemplify effective leadership. The fundamental question remains whether President Tinubu possesses the ethical leadership capacity, even within our national context."

It's worth noting that Bakare participated in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary last year, which culminated in the selection of Tinubu as the party's flagbearer.

Abia pledges to support Federal Medical Centre – Gov Otti

Abia to support Federal Medical Centre – Gov Otti

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has reaffirmed the state government's commitment to providing assistance for the completion of the new accident and emergency ward at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Umuahia. The governor made this pledge during a recent visit to the health facility, where he met with Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi, the chief medical director.

Recognizing the pressing need for improved medical infrastructure, Governor Otti's visit aimed to gain firsthand insight into the conditions at the hospital and demonstrate his empathy towards patients undergoing various treatments. The current accident and emergency ward, which is notably undersized and inadequately equipped, struggles to accommodate the substantial volume of patients seeking care on a daily basis. To address this challenge, a new wing is under construction to enhance the facility's capacity and capabilities.

It's noteworthy that the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia plays a pivotal role as the sole functional public medical institution in Abia State equipped to manage a wide spectrum of cases, including emergencies, secondary, and tertiary health concerns.

During his visit, Governor Otti went beyond words of assurance, pledging personal involvement in supporting the patients he encountered. His commitment extended to personally covering the medical expenses for the individuals he met during his tour of the facility.

In response to Governor Otti's visit and compassionate gesture, Professor Azubuike Onyebuchi, the chief medical director, expressed profound gratitude. He lauded the governor's kind-heartedness, characterizing his willingness to personally engage and address the needs of patients as unprecedented and deeply commendable.

Governor Alex Otti's commitment to advancing healthcare infrastructure and his direct involvement in supporting patients exemplify a compassionate and proactive approach to governance. As the new accident and emergency ward takes shape under the governor's backing, the prospects for enhanced medical services and improved patient experiences at the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia appear promising, setting a positive precedent for the region's healthcare landscape.

Governor Alex Otti's leadership, as noted by Ubah, is resolute in its commitment to eradicate any disruptions to the peace and security of Abia and its citizens. Gone are the days when ransom payments were made to heartless abductors and bandits to secure the release of victims from captivity, according to the security advisor.

Ubah expressed his concern over the recent tragic incident in Aba, the state's commercial hub. He lamented the loss of two policemen in a clash that transpired between security agencies and traders at Ariaria International market. This incident underscored the ongoing challenges in maintaining security and order within the state.

In the face of these security challenges, the Abia State government stands firm in its resolve to tackle criminal elements and restore a sense of safety for its residents. The administration's focus on intelligence gathering, surveillance, and a proactive security approach showcases its determination to overcome criminality and ensure the well-being of the people. As the state moves forward, the commitment to enhanced security remains a top priority to foster a stable environment conducive to growth and prosperity.

Azman Air Enforces Unpaid Leave Amidst Aircraft Checks and Rising Costs

Title: Azman Air Enforces Unpaid Leave Amidst Aircraft Checks and Rising Costs

Azman Air Services Limited has taken the unprecedented step of instructing its entire workforce to take compulsory leave without pay, citing ongoing C-checks on its aircraft and the financial strains of operations. The airline's spokesperson, Nurudden Aliyu, communicated that this decision was prompted by a combination of factors including the mandatory C-checks and the challenging cost landscape of operations.

Aliyu emphasized that the temporary suspension of operations was influenced by the necessity for C-checks on all the domestic operation aircraft, which are vital for ensuring the airworthiness and safety of the fleet. C-checks encompass a comprehensive assessment involving overhaul, repair, parts replacement, and preventive maintenance, as specified by the manufacturer's maintenance guidelines.

The process of sending two aircraft to a maintenance facility in Turkey was initiated by the airline; however, delays in the maintenance hangar queue extended the timeline for completion. Adding to this, the remaining two aircraft were also slated for maintenance, thus compounding the operational challenges. Despite one aircraft reaching 90% completion, it's expected that two of the aircraft will only be operational again by October.

Aliyu underlined the heavy financial burden associated with these maintenance procedures. As a result, the management arrived at the difficult decision to halt the company's operations temporarily.

In correspondence titled 'Placement of Leave Without Pay,' the airline's Human Resources Manager, Magaji Misau, relayed the decision to the staff members. The memo outlined the situation, detailing the suspension of domestic operations due to the ongoing aircraft checks and the extended duration stipulated by the Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facilities.

The memo further communicated that, in light of these challenges, the management had concluded that all staff would be placed on leave without pay, effective from August 1, 2023.

The industry-wide implications of Azman Air's move underscore the intricate web of challenges faced by airlines, ranging from stringent maintenance demands to the ever-fluctuating financial pressures. As the airline navigates this complex terrain, it prompts reflection on the broader ecosystem of aviation operations and the constant balancing act between safety, financial sustainability, and employee welfare.

Senators get payment secretly — but Akpabio pressed the alarm, says Shehu Sani

Senators get payment secretly — but Akpabio pressed the alarm, says Shehu Sani

In a recent revelation, former Kaduna senator Shehu Sani shed light on the discreet payment practices often employed to compensate legislators, away from the public eye. Sani's statement came in response to a recent incident involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who inadvertently disclosed to lawmakers that they had been paid to enjoy their recess.

The incident occurred on a significant day when the upper legislative chamber concluded the screening and confirmation process for President Bola Tinubu's ministerial nominees. Following the successful completion of this task, the senators adjourned their plenary session until September 26.

Addressing his fellow senators before the adjournment motion was moved, Senate President Akpabio made a surprising announcement. He shared that a sum of money had been sent to the senators' individual accounts by Magaji Tambuwal, the clerk of the national assembly, as a gesture to help them enjoy their holidays. The unforeseen twist came when Akpabio was promptly alerted by his colleagues that his comments were being broadcast on live television and captured by press cameras.

Swiftly realizing the implication of his statement, Akpabio retracted his words, stating, "I withdraw that statement." He humorously tried to salvage the situation by adding, "In order to allow you to enjoy your holiday, the senate president has sent prayers to your mailboxes to assist you to go on a safe journey and return."

Akpabio's unintentional admission inadvertently brought into focus the often obscured practices surrounding the allocation of funds to legislators. The salaries and allowances granted to federal lawmakers have long been shrouded in secrecy, raising concerns about transparency and accountability.

In response to the incident, former senator Shehu Sani took to Twitter to share his perspective. Drawing from his own experience as a senator between 2015 and 2019, Sani humorously remarked that crediting legislators' accounts is typically executed under a metaphorical "mute button." He suggested that the Senate President's unintended slip of the tongue inadvertently activated the "alarm," momentarily unveiling a practice that is usually carried out discreetly.

The incident involving Akpabio's off-the-cuff comment underscores the complex dynamics of legislative compensation, which often remain hidden from public scrutiny. As the conversation around transparency and governance continues, the incident serves as a reminder of the challenges in ensuring openness and accountability within legislative processes.

Governor Wike's arrival at the State House at approximately 1:40 pm marked the commencement of this noteworthy gathering. Subsequently, Nasir El-Rufai entered the presidential wing of the Aso Rock complex at around 2 pm, further underlining the significance of the discussions taking place.

Interestingly, both Wike and El-Rufai are believed to be contenders for ministerial positions. It's worth noting that Governor Wike successfully underwent the screening and confirmation process by the Senate, which paved the way for his potential ministerial appointment. NARD President, Innocent Orji, Addresses Ongoing Strike and Suspension of Protest

NARD President, Innocent Orji, Addresses Ongoing Strike and Suspension of Protest

In a recent appearance on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily breakfast programme, NARD President, Innocent Orji, shed light on the current state of affairs concerning the association's industrial action. Despite a temporary halt in their planned protest, the ongoing strike remains in effect, according to Orji. He explained that the National Executive Council will reconvene in 72 hours to reassess the situation.

Orji emphasized that his fellow medical practitioners are facing substantial challenges and underscored the association's eight key demands. A prominent issue among these demands is the urgent requirement for the government to address the critical shortage of medical professionals caused by factors such as brain drain and attrition due to unfortunate circumstances like deaths.

The NARD President voiced his concerns about the profound impact this shortage has on both healthcare professionals and the general public. Insufficient staffing levels directly hinder the effectiveness of healthcare service delivery, leading to increased suffering among Nigerians seeking medical assistance. Orji asserted that the reality of their predicament cannot be denied, as no one has contradicted the association's claims.

Drawing attention to an existing governmental initiative, Orji questioned the lack of progress in implementing a guideline proposed by a ministerial committee earlier in the year. This guideline, if put into practice, could potentially alleviate the issue of brain drain by promptly recruiting doctors upon their completion of education. He expressed disappointment at the apparent absence of urgency from the government's side in this matter.

Orji further criticized the government for its perceived lack of dedication to addressing the association's demands. He highlighted the disheartening reality that the situation had not improved despite ongoing negotiations and discussions.

The decision to suspend the planned protest, as Orji clarified, came after a meeting between the NARD executive and the Senate, headed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. This meeting aimed to foster dialogue and potentially find common ground to address the ongoing crisis.

On July 25, 2023, the Association initiated a "total and indefinite strike action" to highlight pressing concerns, including the need for doctor replacements and a substantial 200% increase in members' salary structure. As the situation unfolds, the medical community and the nation at large await further developments and potential resolutions to this critical issue.

Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms Chairman Proposes VAT Suspension on Diesel to Counteract Fuel Subsidy Removal

Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms Chairman Proposes VAT Suspension on Diesel to Counteract Fuel Subsidy Removal

In a significant development, Taiwo Oyedele, the Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms, has recommended the suspension of Value Added Tax (VAT) on diesel as a strategic measure to mitigate the economic impact stemming from the removal of fuel subsidies. Oyedele shared this proposal during an appearance on Channels Television's Sunrise Daily breakfast program on Wednesday.

Elaborating on the committee's objectives, Oyedele expressed that the initial 30 days of their mandate are focused on addressing pressing issues that have long been acknowledged as challenges, yet remained unaddressed. Drawing parallels with the removal of fuel subsidy on petrol and the subsequent price increases, he suggested that suspending VAT on diesel could offer a balancing mechanism.

While Oyedele was careful to avoid making concrete promises, he highlighted the need to consider such measures in the context of ongoing reforms. The intention is to submit this proposal to the committee for consideration within the specified time frame.

Notably, Taiwo Oyedele, who formerly held the role of Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader at PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC), outlined the committee's broader objectives for the upcoming six months. These objectives encompass the implementation of vital tax reforms, the harmonization of tax laws, issuance of executive orders, and the rollout of essential regulations.

The Presidential Committee, inaugurated by President Bola Tinubu in Abuja on Tuesday, operates within a one-year timeframe to execute its policies. Oyedele clarified that the periods of 30 days, six months, and one year run concurrently, highlighting the urgency behind the proposed reforms.

Addressing revenue collection, Oyedele endorsed the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) as the optimal entity to manage revenue collection for ministries, departments, and agencies. Furthermore, the committee aims to delve into the issue of excessive bank charges, revealing that businesses are burdened by a multitude of levies and taxes, often numbering as high as 65 to 70. To streamline this complex landscape, the committee aims to significantly reduce the number of taxes to a more manageable count, approximately 10.

As the Presidential Committee on Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms takes significant steps toward reshaping Nigeria's taxation landscape, Oyedele's recommendations highlight the proactive measures being explored to navigate economic challenges and promote a more equitable tax structure. The concurrent timelines emphasize the committee's commitment to delivering tangible results in a timely manner.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Akwa Ibom State have joined the nationwide protests against the removal of fuel subsidies and the resulting hardships faced by Nigerians. During the protests held at various locations in Uyo, the state capital, the unions called on the federal government to establish modular refineries and petroleum depots in Akwa Ibom, an oil-producing state.

The protesting workers carried placards with various demands, including the reversal of recent petrol price hikes, the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit buses for workers, and the resuscitation of existing refineries. They also emphasized the need for salary awards for workers and the prompt payment of gratuity to retired workers.

Comrade Abang, the TUC Chairman, highlighted the significance of functional refineries for the nation's economy and stressed the importance of providing palliatives to micro, small, and medium enterprises to stimulate economic growth.

Comrade James, the NLC Chairperson, expressed regret that despite being an oil-producing state, Akwa Ibom lacked the essential facilities like refineries and depots, which would have helped reduce the cost of petroleum products within the state. He further criticized the Presidential Steering Committee, asserting that Nigerians could no longer be taken for granted, and urged the federal government to demonstrate the political will to implement the proposed palliatives effectively.

In response to the unions' demands, Governor Umo Eno assured the organized labor that his administration would establish a palliative committee to ensure the efficient distribution of palliatives in the state. He acknowledged the pain experienced by the citizens and commended the peaceful conduct of the protest.

The governor revealed that the state government had received a circular from the federal government regarding the release of palliatives to states. He urged the citizens to grant the disbursement team ten days to begin the distribution process.

Governor Eno further shared his commitment to resolving the challenges faced by the state, including the provision of buses for workers through an arrangement with Innoson Motors. Additionally, he announced the release of one billion naira to address the gratuity payment for primary school teachers.

The peaceful protest organized by the NLC and TUC in Akwa Ibom State serves as a platform for the state's workers to express their grievances and demand essential facilities that could positively impact their lives and livelihoods. As the government acknowledges the workers' concerns and addresses their demands, it is crucial to foster open dialogue and continue to work towards sustainable solutions that will alleviate the burden faced by the citizens.

The call by the NLC and TUC for the establishment of refineries and depots in Akwa Ibom State highlights the significance of providing necessary infrastructure in oil-producing regions. The protests also underscore the importance of effective palliatives and responsive governance to address the concerns of Nigerian workers. By engaging in constructive dialogue and implementing practical measures, the government can create a conducive environment for economic growth and prosperity in the state and the nation as a whole.

Subsidy protest: We’ll make our decision known Thursday – NLC after meeting Tinubu

Subsidy protest: We’ll make our decision known Thursday – NLC after meeting Tinubu

In recent times, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been at the forefront of protests against the removal of fuel subsidies. The NLC President, Mr Joe Ajaero, revealed that a decision regarding the suspension or continuation of the protest would be made known on Thursday. This article delves into the reasons behind the protests, the stance of President Bola Tinubu, and the future actions that the NLC intends to take.

Understanding the Fuel Subsidy Removal and its Impact

The fuel subsidy removal is a contentious issue that has sparked public outcry across Nigeria. The government's decision to remove the subsidy has resulted in increased fuel prices, leading to hardships for citizens already grappling with economic challenges. The NLC has been vocal in demanding that the government provide palliatives to cushion the effects of this decision on the masses.

The Meeting with President Bola Tinubu

Following the ongoing protests, NLC President Joe Ajaero had a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja. During the meeting, President Tinubu emphasized that he did not force the organized labour to suspend the protests. He acknowledged the importance of protests as a tool for expressing grievances in a democratic society. In response, President Tinubu made certain commitments, which were taken into consideration alongside the Senate's stance on the issue.

Considering the Way Forward

The NLC's decision-making process is a collective one, and Mr Ajaero stressed that no single individual could call off the protest. The outcome of the meeting with President Tinubu will be reviewed, and a document outlining the NLC's next line of action will be released. The executive members will have a significant role in shaping the future of the protests.

The Role of the National Executive Council (NEC)

The NLC will also be convening a National Executive Council (NEC) meeting to discuss the broader implications and consider the bigger picture. The NEC meeting will be instrumental in formulating a unified stance and strategy to address the fuel subsidy removal issue effectively.

Factors Influencing the NLC's Decision

Several factors will likely influence the NLC's decision on whether to suspend or continue the protests. These factors include the extent of public support, the government's response, and the potential for attaining their demands through dialogue or sustained protests.

The Importance of Palliatives

One of the primary demands of the NLC is the provision of palliatives to mitigate the adverse effects of the fuel subsidy removal. The absence of adequate measures to alleviate the burden on the citizens has been a central point in the NLC's advocacy.

President Tinubu's Pro-Democracy Stand

President Bola Tinubu's pro-democracy background has been noted by Mr Ajaero. This understanding of protests and advocacy for democratic rights may have implications for how the government views and responds to the NLC's demands.

The ongoing protests by the Nigeria Labour Congress highlight the deep concerns and grievances of the citizens over the removal of fuel subsidies. The decision on whether to suspend or continue the protests will be determined by careful deliberations and collective decision-making within the NLC. It is essential for both the government and the NLC to engage in constructive dialogue to find a lasting solution to the issues at hand.

Nigerian Government Cuts Off Power Supplies to Niger Republic Following Coup

Nigerian Government Cuts Off Power Supplies to Niger Republic Following Coup

In the aftermath of a military junta's takeover, Niger Republic is facing power supply disruptions as the Nigerian government enforces sanctions. The elected president of Niger, Mohamed Bazoum, was ousted by the military junta, prompting the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to take swift action, including cutting off utility services to the country.

The impact of this decision was evident when Niger's electricity company, Nigelec, announced that power supplies from Nigeria had been severed. In an emergency meeting by ECOWAS, measures were taken to impose sanctions on the Niger Republic, leading to the suspension of electricity services.

According to BBC reports, major cities such as Maradi, Zinder, and Niamey experienced a brief hour of power before enduring up to five hours of outage. This disruption is highly unusual for Niger, as the country has been accustomed to regular and reliable power supplies in the past.

Niger Republic relies heavily on Nigeria for approximately 70 percent of its electricity, primarily generated from the Kainji Dam. The sudden cutoff has exposed the vulnerability of Niger's energy infrastructure and raised concerns about the country's ability to manage its power needs independently.

As the situation unfolds, the Nigerien population is likely to face challenges due to the electricity shortage, impacting their daily lives and businesses. The decision by the Nigerian government to suspend power supplies serves as a strong statement against the military coup and highlights the regional consequences of political instability.

ECOWAS's actions are indicative of the organization's commitment to upholding democratic principles and condemning any attempts to subvert elected governments. However, the enforcement of sanctions, including utility freezes, also underscores the complexity and far-reaching implications of political upheavals in the region.

While the restoration of power supply from Nigeria remains uncertain, it is evident that Niger Republic needs to explore alternative strategies for ensuring a stable and reliable energy future. Diversification of energy sources, investment in domestic power generation, and collaboration with regional partners could be essential steps to mitigate the impact of such geopolitical events in the future.

The Nigerian government's decision to cut off power supplies to Niger Republic in response to the military coup has resulted in significant power outages in the affected cities. The reliance on Nigerian electricity highlights the interdependence between the two nations, underscoring the importance of regional cooperation and stability. As the situation evolves, it is crucial for Niger Republic to address its energy security and explore long-term solutions to avoid similar vulnerabilities in the future. The implications of this power supply disruption extend beyond electricity, impacting the lives and livelihoods of the Nigerien population, and emphasizing the need for diplomatic and sustainable resolutions in times of political uncertainty.
