Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, leading Adamawa State, has taken proactive measures to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the state's populace. Recognizing the potential challenges posed by this change, Governor Fintiri has established a dedicated 20-member implementation committee to oversee the equitable distribution of palliative items aimed at mitigating the effects on the people.
According to a statement released by the governor's Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, this committee is composed of a diverse array of organizations, agencies, groups, and individuals. As the initial step, the distribution will encompass essential resources such as grains and other foodstuffs.
Guiding this initiative is the committee's chairman, Awwal Tukur, who holds the position of Secretary to the State Government (SSG). The committee's composition reflects a balanced representation, including two first-class chiefs, two National Assembly members, two members from the state House of Assembly, the Commissioner of Humanitarian Services, and the Head of Service.
Further contributing to the committee's collective expertise are key figures such as the state's ALGON chairman, commanders from the 23 Armoured Brigade Yola and the Air Force Base Yola, the Commissioner of Police, the director of the Department of State Services (DSS), and the commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
Significantly, the committee also accommodates representatives from various socio-religious groups including CAN (Christian Association of Nigeria) and the Muslim Council, as well as stakeholders such as the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the National Council of Women's Societies (NCWS).
The committee's operational effectiveness is bolstered by the presence of an official from the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency (ADSEMA), who will serve as its secretary.
While the official statement from the Government House in Yola does not explicitly state the source of the palliative items, it is noteworthy that Adamawa State, in line with other states, will receive a five billion naira allocation from the Federal Government to aid in addressing the ramifications of the fuel subsidy removal.
This proactive response by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri underscores the administration's commitment to the welfare and well-being of the people of Adamawa State, particularly during times of transformative economic shifts.
