Coronavirus lockdown pushes Germany into recession

COVID-19 pushes Germany into recession - The Nation Nigeria

Germany is officially in recession after official figures released on Friday May 15, that showed that the European country's economy shrank by 2.2% in the first three months of this year.

The figures released by the federal statistics authority Destasis, also showed revisions to 2019 fourth-quarter figures from zero growth to a contraction of 0.1%. This meant that Germany's GDP growth has been negative for two successive quarters, the technical definition of a recession.

The first quarter figures are only a partial indication of how much the Coronavirus pandemic has harmed Europe's largest economy.

Though experts had expected a contraction of around 2%, the drop is not as bad as in some of its neighbours, such as France which has seen a decline of 5.8%, and Italy which reported a 4.7% fall. This was aided by Germany's 16 states' decision to allow factories and construction sites to stay open, as well as an unprecedented rescue package by the government.

Germany had imposed restrictions due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and this remained in place through early May. It also drastically reduced exports and consumer spending.

Employment figures remained stable in the first quarter. The coronavirus outbreak had only a "modest" effect on employment between January and March, the agency said, partly thanks to Germany’s reduced-working-hours program, which allows firms to keep workers at home without laying them off.

Khoe Kardashian reacts as she's called out following speculations, she's pregnant for Tristan Thompson again

Tristan Thompson's Reported Reaction To Khloe Kardashian Dumping ...

Khloe Kardashian is the number 1 trend on Twitter as people called her out and demanded she apologizes to Jordyn Woods following speculations that she's expecting another baby with ex-boyfriend, Tristan Thompson.

Khloe publicly called out Jordyn Woods after she was filmed partying with her baby daddy Tristan following the birth of their first child together, True Thompson. As a result, Jordyn, who was a good friend of the Kardashian family, became estranged from the family.

Khloe also broke up with Tristan but they have now reconciled and are reportedly quarantining together. Khloe even recently discussed freezing her eggs with Tristan's sperm to ensure a second baby on a recent episode of the family's reality show, Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

Well, for some reason, social media users believed Khloe is pregnant with her and Tristan's second child and they took to the platform to criticize her.

They called her a clown and a hypocrite for shaming her sister's best friend Jordyn. They also accused her of making Kylie let go of her best friend, while Khloe refused to let go of the man who cheated with the same best friend.

The Good American co-founder has now reacted.

She tweeted: "I don’t go on social platforms much these days AND this is one of the main reasons as to why I stay away. The sick and hurtful things people say. I am disgusted by so many things I am seeing. SMH people swear they know everything about me. Including my uterus. Sick.

"The nasty things you’re saying about me over A RUMOR! I have seen so many hurtful/despicable stories and tweets about me over a false story. And if it were true.... it’s MY LIFE, NOT YOURS.

"Funny how picky&choosy some can be with who and how you feel others should live their lives. I believe people should focus on their own lives/families, put energy into bettering the scary world we are currently living in, and try projecting positivity as opposed to nastiness."

Madagascar’s herbal cure for COVID-19 sent to Nigeria

Madagascar's COVID-19 cure drugs sent to Nigeria

Nigeria is set to receive Republic of Madagascar's herbal drug 'COVID Organics (COV)', which the country's leaders said cures and prevents Coronavirus.

The Nation reported that Nigeria’s consignment has been sent to Equatorial Guinea from where it will be airlifted to Abuja. It was gathered that African countries were divided into zones for ease of transportation, leading to freighting of Nigeria’s consignments to Equatorial Guinea.

The Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 has been notified of the offer from Madagascar and arrangements are being made to bring Nigeria’s allocation to Abuja.

While some health officials are pushing for clinical trial of Covid Organics before being used in the country, there is reportedly pressure on the Federal Government by different medical and scientific organizations to allow the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) subject the drug to further analysis.

The Nation source said;

“The consignments of the drug are being distributed to different countries in Africa based on zonal grouping. We have been told that Nigeria’s consignment is in Equatorial Guinea from where it will be airlifted to Abuja.

“When the herbal drink is brought into the country, we will know the next step. But some medical and scientific organisations are pressurising that the drug be subjected to clinical trial.

“Some countries like Tanzania, Congo-Brazzaville, Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea have subscribed to the drugs. Also, while South Africa has offered to conduct a scientific analysis of the drug, Senegal said it will subject it to clinical trial.

“I can assure you that the Federal Government will take the best decision on the drug in the overall interest of Nigerians.

“Before any food or drug can be administered in this country, there are certain protocols that must be followed. The government will not circumvent these protocols. We want solution; we want the best for Nigerians.”

Recall that on April 28, the Chairman of the PTF on COVID-19, Mr. Boss Mustapha said the nation was ready to give Madagascar’s herbal drink a trial.

Mustapha said at that time;

“I want to assure you that whatever is happening in the world, we are mindful of it and we are keeping a tab.

“I was reading of the experiences in Madagascar– of why everybody is drinking some solutions that have been prepared. This morning I was sharing with my wife, and I told her that probably I would request that Mr. President allow us import a plane load for a trial.

“We are all navigating an unchartered cause. Nobody has ever been on this road. So, every attempt to find solution that would bring succour to our people, be rest assured that this task force is very responsible and we would do everything to ensure that we get what will benefit our people, what will help them in the processes that we find ourselves today.”

This is coming after the World Health Organisation (WHO) maintained that the efficacy of the drug was unproven.

Father and son involved in the killing of black jogger Ahmaud Arbery were arrested at their home by heavily-armed officers

Their arrest comes days after a graphic video of Arbery's final moments was shared online this week, prompting a national outcry from people who called for the suspects to be arrested and charged.
In the video, Arbery was seen jogging in a white neighborhood when he was stopped by McMichael and his father in a white pickup truck. McMichael was armed with a shotgun. Arbery ran around the
After at least two shots, the men continued struggling over the gun, until Arbery stumbled away, and then collapsed to the ground. He was later pronounced dead.

Coronavirus vaccine must be shared worldwide - Pope Francis

Leader of the Roman Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has called for international scientific cooperation so that every country of the world will benefit from a Coronavirus vaccine when it is made.
The Pope who was speaking from the papal library at the Vatican while delivering his Sunday service address today, said any successful vaccine developed should be made available around the world to benefit all of humanity.
Pope Francis also thanked all those around the world, providing essential services.
"In fact, it is important to unite scientific capabilities, in a transparent and impartial way to find vaccines and treatments," he said.
''It is also important to guarantee universal access to essential technologies that allow each infected person, in every part of the world, to receive the necessary medical treatment."
Recall that World leaders pledged in April to accelerate work on tests, drugs and vaccines against the disease and share their findings, but the United States did not take part in the launch of the World Health Organization (WHO) initiative after Trump announced he was halting funds to the WHO over what his administration feels was the agency's pandering to China.
Coronavirus has infected nearly 3.5 million people and killed more than 240,000 people worldwide.

Coronavirus cases in the United States surpass 1 million

The number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in the United States surpassed one million on Tuesday, April 28, 2020.
There are at least 1,029,179 cases of the virus across the US with 58,412 deaths, according to a tally from health officials by John Hopkins University.
The new figures also showed that about 140,138 people have recovered from Coronavirus.
New York City remains the hardest hit in the US with over 160, 000 cases of Coronavirus and 12, 509 deaths.
The grim milestone comes after seven coronavirus models anticipate a rise in cases that will depend on how much "contact reduction" Americans practice, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
"State-level forecasts vary widely, reflecting differences in early epidemic phases, timing of interventions, and model-specific assumptions," the CDC says.
''Models that factor in strong contact reduction suggest deaths will continue to occur, but will "slow substantially over the next four weeks,"
"Conversely, models that do not incorporate as strong contact reductions ... suggest that total deaths may continue to rise quickly." the CDC added

France's Ligue 1 and Ligue 2  2019/20 seasons have been canceled due to the Coronavirus pandemic, and the current plan is to start the 2020/21 season in the next four months.
The announcement comes a week after the French Professional Football League (LFP) announced plans for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 to resume on June 17, with UEFA setting a deadline of August 2 for domestic leagues to be completed.
However, on Tuesday afternoon, French prime minister Edouard Philippe announced that all sporting events will be cancelled until September, as part of the next stage of their lockdown plans beyond May 11.

Piers Morgan ends his 15-year friendship with Donald Trump with a brutal open letter to the US president

Daily Mail Columnist, Piers Morgan has ended his 15-year friendship with Donald Trump with a brutal open letter to the US president after Trump unfollowed him on Twitter for criticizing his approach to the Coronavirus.
Recall the Good Morning Britain host wrote an article, where he told Trump to 'shut the f**k up' because his approach to the Coronavirus pandemic was 'batsh*t crazy'.
Few hours later, Trump, who didn't find the article funny, unfollowed him on Twitter.
Piers Morgan ends his 15-year friendship with Donald Trump with a brutal open letter to the US president?
In reply to the US president, Piers Morgan has penned a brutal open letter to Trump, ending their 15-year friendship.
Read his open letter below.
Dear Donald,
On Friday evening, you unfollowed me on Twitter, which given you only follow 47 accounts was not an insignificant decision.
It came a few hours after I posted a column in which I lambasted you for using your daily Coronavirus press briefings to air ‘batsh*t crazy’ cure theories like ‘injecting or ingesting’ bleach into patients with COVID-19.
I used very forceful language to convey my dismay at such reckless, shocking and woefully irresponsible behavior.
Indeed, the column began with the words ‘SHUT THE F**K UP, PRESIDENT TRUMP!’
And for that, I make no apology.
You are the most powerful person in America and your words carry enormous weight and consequence. Within hours of you suggesting it might be a good idea to use bleach, one public health hotline in one state – Maryland – received 100 phone calls asking about whether they should use household detergent to combat the virus, and was forced to issue an alert warning people not to try it.
New York City’s Poison Control Center took 30 similar calls from the moment your briefing last Thursday night ended to 3pm the next day - and was also forced to release an alert saying that using bleach ‘can put people at great risk.’
This latest debacle came after you previously and repeatedly hyped up an anti-malaria drug, hydroxychloroquine, as another ‘cure’ - until it turned out to cause more deaths in COVID patients than those who weren’t treated with it.
This is a terrifying illustration of how dangerous your rhetoric can be.
So yes, I think when it comes to floating mad ideas about potential ‘cures’ for coronavirus, you should shut the f*ck up.
I can understand why such direct language from a long-time friend may have offended you, and I understood that when I wrote it. You have a notoriously thin skin and take any criticism very badly.
(Though, from personal experience, I don’t think you’re a stranger to deploying such profane terminology yourself when something angers you.)
But I’ve always believed the best friends are ones unafraid to offer blunt unvarnished criticism to someone who is behaving in a shockingly self-destructive way, especially when that person is the President of the United States during a global pandemic.
We’ve known each other 15 years, and I’ve always tried to be fair and balanced when it’s come to your presidency. I criticize you when I think you deserve it (I’ve written 55 critical columns about you) and I support you if I think you’re right.
That makes me an outlier in current media, the vast majority of whom either implacably criticize you or blindly support you.
But if you can’t handle my criticism, and our friendship is over, then let me mark the end of our relationship with a few home truths about your spectacularly bad handling of this crisis that may yet, if you heed them, still enable you to get re-elected in November.
1) Get serious, very serious. The world leaders that are seeing their approval ratings soar – including Germany’s Angela Merkel, New Zealand’s Jacinda Arderne and France’s Emmanuel Macron - are the ones who realized early on this was going to be the biggest crisis in their country’s modern history and have adjusted their behavior accordingly. Nobody wants to see or hear their leader playing the buffoon when thousands are dying from a terrible virus. They want a gravity that reflects the reality.
2) Show some damn empathy and compassion. You’ve barely mentioned, in any of your long rambling briefings, the terrible impact of this coronavirus on the American people.
In fact, the Washington Post calculated that you’ve spent just 4.5 minutes expressing any condolences, in over 13 hours of talking from the podium. More than 55,000 Americans have now died. Their relatives, friends and co-workers want to hear that you care about them. So, show them that you do, every day. Tell some of their stories, and those who’ve survived too. We need hope amid the despair.
3) Stop warring with the media. There can be no more important job for any journalist than holding a government’s feet to the fire during such a massive crisis where so many lives are dependent on the right decisions being made. The way you’ve been abusing the media during your briefings is repulsively rude and undignified.
Remember the words of President John F. Kennedy about freedom of the press: ‘Without debate, without criticism, no Administration and no country can succeed. That is why our press was protected by the First Amendment - the only business specifically protected by the Constitution – not primarily to amuse and entertain, not to emphasize the trivial and the sentimental, not to simply “give the public what it wants” but to inform, to arouse, to reflect, to state our dangers and our opportunities, to indicate our crises and our choices, to lead, mould, educate and sometime even anger public opinion.’ If you want the press to show you respect, then start showing them some.
4) Cut the briefings to a maximum of 45 minutes and don’t speak yourself for more than 10 minutes. Nobody wants to hear a daily free-wheeling campaign rally other than you and your die-hard base supporters. In a hideously unedifying way, you keep boasting about your brilliant ratings for the briefings, but the only reasons so many are tuning in are because either they’re scared and want accurate information and reassurance. Or because they love car crash television.
At the moment, you’re offering plenty of the latter and none of the former.
5) Tell the truth. In a public health disaster of this magnitude, truth matters more than ever. Yet you’ve offered false or misleading information in 25% of your remarks. This is completely unacceptable in a president during the best of times, but during a crisis like this it’s outrageous. It’s particularly self-defeating when you lie about something that we’ve seen with our own eyes like the bleach moment. It wasn’t ‘sarcasm’, as you claimed later, and you weren’t addressing it to the ‘fake news’ - we could see you asking your experts. So, when you try to excuse your horrendous error like that, you reveal yourself, ironically, to be the purveyor of fake news.
6) Stop constantly praising yourself. It’s nauseating at a time like this. Apart from the fact you don’t deserve much praise for your performance in this crisis due to America’s horribly slow response to the virus and chronic lack of preparedness, it is so diminishing for you to stand there for hour after hour telling us how great you are and what a perfect job you’re doing as America’s death toll rockets ever higher. Macron admitted to his people that his administration had made mistakes in the preparation for this kind of pandemic, and the French people loved his candour. Learn from that; a little humility in your case would go a very long way right now.
7) Leave medical statements to the experts. There have been few more absurd spectacles than watching you at the podium theorizing about any new crazy coronavirus theory you’ve just heard, like you’re Dr House. You’re not a doctor, as you admitted last week. So, stop pretending to be one.
8) Cut tweeting so much irrelevant crap. Last night you embarked on a cringe-making and pitifully petty tweet storm (much of it now deleted) against the media, demanding journalists give back their ‘Noble prizes’. As I pointed out in my reply, it’s ‘Nobel’ and the prizes you were alluding to are Pulitzers. But who the hell cares anyway? There is only one thing you should be laser-focused on right now and it’s how to defeat coronavirus before it slaughters more Americans.
9) I don’t want to hear any more from you about how hard you’re working. I expect, and every American will assume, that the President of the United States is currently working as hard as he possibly can on the biggest crisis to hit the country in modern times. Again, reign in the overly-defensive self-justification and self-aggrandizing, it just irritates people who are suffering massive problems.

10) Forget about the bitter and twisted partisan politics that dominated and scarred your presidency to the point when coronavirus erupted. Everything’s changed. We all have a common enemy now, and it’s one that doesn’t recognize a republican from a democrat. You should be bringing your opponents to the White House and presenting a united front, not continuing to mock and belittle them.
Mr President, nobody pretends that any of this is easy. There can’t be anything worse for any leader than seeing a new, wicked virus ravage the country, killing tens of thousands of people, and the economy suddenly tank to the worst levels in US history.
These are scary times and millions of people are suffering very badly. But you’re making it worse with your dangerously erratic conduct.
And if you continue, it will cost you the election.
Chancellor Merkel is someone whose crisis leadership is a template for what you should be doing.
Germany’s top coronavirus scientist Christian Drosten explained her popularity today in the Guardian: ‘She’s extremely well-informed, it helps that she’s a scientist and can handle numbers. But it mainly comes down to her character – her thoughtfulness and ability to reassure. Maybe one of the distinguishing features of a good leader is they are not using this situation as a political opportunity. They know how counter-productive it would be.
Exactly.
You’ve dug yourself into a horrible hole, Donald, and you’re making it deeper with everything you do and say.
However, if you heed my advice, and begin to guide the country through its darkest hour with a more serious, consistent, determined and empathetic style, then I believe there is still a chance the American people will forgive you and reward you with re-election later this year.
You don’t have to re-follow me Donald, but for old time’s sake I would urge you to listen to me.
Yours respectfully, Piers.

Saudi Arabia ends death penalty for crimes committed by minors after 'effectively' abolishing flogging

Saudi Arabia is ending the death penalty for crimes committed by minors, the kingdom’s Human Rights Commission has announced.
In a statement published on Sunday, president of the state-backed commission Awwad Alawwad said: “The decree helps us in establishing a more modern penal code.”
“Instead, the individual will receive a prison sentence of no longer than 10 years in a juvenile detention facility,” the statement said.
The decree is expected to spare the lives of at least six men from the minority Shia community who are on death row. The six men were accused of taking part in anti-government protests during the Arab Spring uprisings while they were under the age of 18.
“This is an important day for Saudi Arabia,” said Awwad Alawwad. “The decree helps us in establishing a more modern penal code.”
Details of when the new ruling would come into effect were not provided, but it comes two days after it was revealed that Saudi Arabia would no longer use flogging as a punishment for crimes, bringing to an end the practice for which the kingdom has long been criticised.
A record 184 people were executed in the kingdom in 2019, according to human rights group Amnesty International.

Senegal develops one of the world's most affordable Coronavirus testing kits which costs $1 each and $60 3D printed ventilators

Senegal has reportedly developed one of the world's most affordable Coronavirus testing kits, which costs $1 each and $60 3D printed ventilators.
A laboratory in Senegal used its AIDS and Ebola experience to develop a $1 COVID-19 testing kit and ventilators that cost just $60.
Despite the country's low budget for health, the West African nation has recorded the highest recovery rate in Africa so far and the 3rd highest recovery rate in the world. 283 of its 671 Coronavirus patients have recovered and 9 have died.
The high recovery rate is due to Senegal's affordable Coronavirus test kits which makes it possible to test and treat more people as compared to other countries.
Unlike most countries that wait till patients start exhibiting symptoms before tests are carried out due to shortage of test kits, Senegal is testing everyone who indicates interest, symptoms or not, and this has helped them identify those affected early to allow them begin treatment before the illness progresses.
Also, with a scarcity of ventilators in the country, Senegal's engineers are using a 3D printing machine to produce more ventilators. Imported ventilators cost $16,000 but the one manufactured by Senegal engineers cost only $60.
Senegal has managed to keep the spread of Coronavirus down to one of the world's lowest rates and have developed a cheap, effective test that can be mass produced and globally distributed.

Rapper, Kanye West officially becomes a Billionaire

Kanye West has officially become a Billionaire, making him the second American rapper to reach that status after Jay-Z.
According to Forbes, ’Ye's Yeezy brand, which he owns in its' entirety and falls under the Adidas umbrella, helped push him over the $1 billion mark.
The publication said they dissected the Chicago rapper's success with Yeezy, while also sharing how they tabulated Kanye's net worth.
Nonetheless, a decent portion of Kanye's net worth can be attributed to his royalty agreement with Adidas. West receives a "royalty around 15% of Yeezy revenue from Adidas. Upon closer inspection, it appears some expenses are carved out of that slice, bringing his actual cut closer to 11 percent. At that rate, he would have received royalties of over $140 million from Yeezy sales last year," the report says.
Kanye West's team provided a statement of the rapper's assets, which were listed as $17 million in cash, $35 million in stocks, $81 million in “buildings and improvements,” $21 million in land, as well as his G.O.O.D. label and publishing rights, which is said to be worth at least $90 million. There were also a sizable deduction for $100 million worth of debts, which included mortgages and advances.
Forbes also noted that they gave Kanye's net worth a "50 percent haircut" due to the illiquidity of his assets and the "the lack of independent backup." The team also deducted $100 million for debts, which included mortgages and advances, putting Kanye's estimated net worth at $1.3 billion.
But Kanye reportedly disagreed with Forbes. "It’s not a billion," he allegedly texted the reporters Thursday night. "It’s $3.3 billion since no one at Forbes knows how to count."

Germany's Bundesliga to resume on May 9 with just 322 people per game allowed into stadiums amid the Coronavirus pandemic

Germany's Bundesliga is set to become the first major European league to resume amid the Coronavirus pandemic.
The decision was made during a video conference on Thursday April 23, between representatives of all 36 clubs in the top two divisions decided to restart games on May 9, after the remaining league matches were initially suspended due to the Coronavirus outbreak.
According to Mail Online Sport, matches will take place behind closed doors with a maximum of 322 people allowed in and around stadiums for top-flight Bundesliga matches and 270 for second-tier games.
The publication also reported that drastic changes will be made with hygiene precautions to be put in place with widespread testing of players and coaches at an estimated cost of £2.2million, while protective masks will be mandatory for some in attendance.
The German football federation (DFL) has estimated that 25,000 coronavirus tests at around £90 each will be needed to check each player on at least a weekly basis.
DFL CEO Christian Seifert said: 'The Bundesliga is ready to resume, no matter whether on May 9 or a later date. But it's not up to us to find a date. The political decision-makers decide.
'We have not defined an exact date today. The fact that we are even able to think about resuming games underlines the performance of the German authorities.
'It would be presumptuous for the DFL to name an exact date for the restart.
'It's not in our hands if we return or when. We have several options. If the signal comes in the next week that it can be May 9, then it will be May 9.'
On the issue of testing, Seifert added: 'Professional football would not even consume 0.4 percent of the available test capacity in the country.'
He said there had been 14 positive Covid-19 cases among 1,100 licensed players and all had recovered.
The next federal government conference, which could give the green light for the plans, is scheduled for April 30.
According to Worldometers, Germany has 150,729 recorded cases of Coronavirus with 5,315 deaths, while 91,612 people have recovered from the disease.

Naira crashes further at the parallel market due to dollar scarcity

The downward slide of the naira in the parallel market appears not to end anytime soon, as the slump in crude oil prices, and pressure on the foreign exchange market continues.
The local currency dropped to N425 to a dollar, its lowest level in the parallel market since 2017, according to information gotten from Aboki fx.
This indicates a depreciation of about 1.2%, when compared to the N420 per dollar that it sold for on Tuesday, April 21, 2020.
It is also coming against the backdrop of the slump of Bonny light crude price to just over $14 per barrel, and the selling of Brent crude at less than $20 per barrel on Tuesday.
The naira has been hitting new lows in the parallel market and over the counter spots on declining volume, due to low dollar inflow. The naira was quoted at a low of N388.92 to a dollar in the spot market on Tuesday.
The further crash of crude oil prices globally, as a result of low demand and storage issues, has put further pressure on the already strained foreign exchange market.
It was also reported that the naira weakened in the forward market, as the one-year dollar/naira non-deliverable forwards were 498.5 points on Tuesday, as against 492.4 on Monday.
The increased demand for US dollar is caused by importers with past-due obligations scrambling for hard currency and speculators who are buying to hedge against the future, while providers of foreign exchange, like foreign investors and the ones from foreign remittances, have either exited or declined drastically as a result of the global lockdown.
This is compounded by the suspension of dollar sales to Bureau de Change operators.

Obama endorses Joe Biden for President

Former President Barack Obama has endorsed his former vice president, Joe Biden as the Presidential candidate of the Democratic party and the President of the United States.
In a video message he shared on his social media accounts, the former US President urged Democrats to rally behind Biden and form a unified front to defeat President Donald Trump and win back the White House.
Obama also stated that Trump and Republicans in the Senate are solely interested in power, not making progress for Americans.
The endorsement came one day after Sen. Bernie Sanders, offered Biden his endorsement during a livestream. Sanders ended his campaign for president last week, leaving Biden as the apparent nominee.

Obama said;
"Choosing Joe to be my Vice President was one of the best decisions I ever made, and he became a close friend.
"And I believe Joe has all the qualities we need in a president right now. He’s someone whose own life has taught him how to persevere; how to bounce back when you’ve been knocked down.
"Through all his trials, he’s never once forgotten the values or the moral fiber that his parents passed on to him, and that made him who he is. That’s what steels his faith — in God, in America, and in all of us.
"I know Biden will surround himself with good people — experts, scientists, military officials who actually know how to run the government and care about doing a good job running the government, and know how to work with our allies, and who will always put the American people’s interests above their own.
"The kind of leadership that's guided by knowledge and experience, honesty and humility, empathy and grace -- that kind of leadership doesn't just belong in our state capitols and mayors offices. It belongs in the White House.
"And that's why I'm so proud to endorse Joe Biden for President of the United States."
Biden responded to the endorsement on Twitter, and he wrote;
"Barack — This endorsement means the world to Jill and me. We’re going to build on the progress we made together, and there’s no one I’d rather have standing by my side."
The endorsement marks the public re-emergence of Obama into the political arena. The former president kept a low public profile throughout much of the Democratic nomination fight, but he was active behind the scenes.
In recent weeks, he had several calls with Sanders, as part of discussions that also included Biden about how best to unite the party, sources familiar with the discussions told NBC News last week

Speaking at Downing Street's daily coronavirus briefing on Wednesday, UK Chancellor Rishi Sunak said the prime minister was recovering.
"The latest from the hospital is the prime minister remains in intensive care where his condition is improving," the chancellor said.

"The prime minister is not only my colleague and my boss but also my friend, and my thoughts are with him and his family."
