NLC and TUC Urge Government to Establish Refineries and Depots in Akwa Ibom State

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) in Akwa Ibom State have joined the nationwide protests against the removal of fuel subsidies and the resulting hardships faced by Nigerians. During the protests held at various locations in Uyo, the state capital, the unions called on the federal government to establish modular refineries and petroleum depots in Akwa Ibom, an oil-producing state.

The protesting workers carried placards with various demands, including the reversal of recent petrol price hikes, the introduction of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) mass transit buses for workers, and the resuscitation of existing refineries. They also emphasized the need for salary awards for workers and the prompt payment of gratuity to retired workers.

Comrade Abang, the TUC Chairman, highlighted the significance of functional refineries for the nation's economy and stressed the importance of providing palliatives to micro, small, and medium enterprises to stimulate economic growth.

Comrade James, the NLC Chairperson, expressed regret that despite being an oil-producing state, Akwa Ibom lacked the essential facilities like refineries and depots, which would have helped reduce the cost of petroleum products within the state. He further criticized the Presidential Steering Committee, asserting that Nigerians could no longer be taken for granted, and urged the federal government to demonstrate the political will to implement the proposed palliatives effectively.

In response to the unions' demands, Governor Umo Eno assured the organized labor that his administration would establish a palliative committee to ensure the efficient distribution of palliatives in the state. He acknowledged the pain experienced by the citizens and commended the peaceful conduct of the protest.

The governor revealed that the state government had received a circular from the federal government regarding the release of palliatives to states. He urged the citizens to grant the disbursement team ten days to begin the distribution process.

Governor Eno further shared his commitment to resolving the challenges faced by the state, including the provision of buses for workers through an arrangement with Innoson Motors. Additionally, he announced the release of one billion naira to address the gratuity payment for primary school teachers.

The peaceful protest organized by the NLC and TUC in Akwa Ibom State serves as a platform for the state's workers to express their grievances and demand essential facilities that could positively impact their lives and livelihoods. As the government acknowledges the workers' concerns and addresses their demands, it is crucial to foster open dialogue and continue to work towards sustainable solutions that will alleviate the burden faced by the citizens.

The call by the NLC and TUC for the establishment of refineries and depots in Akwa Ibom State highlights the significance of providing necessary infrastructure in oil-producing regions. The protests also underscore the importance of effective palliatives and responsive governance to address the concerns of Nigerian workers. By engaging in constructive dialogue and implementing practical measures, the government can create a conducive environment for economic growth and prosperity in the state and the nation as a whole.
