The Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), was marked by somber protests as students gathered on Friday to mourn the untimely passing of Ayomide Akeredolu, a 500-level student of the institution. The news of Akeredolu's demise sent shockwaves through the campus, leading his fellow students to stage a demonstration in his memory.
In a poignant display of their grief, the students took to the streets, effectively barricading the bustling Akure-Ilesa highway. This demonstration, while a heartrending tribute to their departed peer, brought about significant disruption to vehicular movement. The resultant traffic congestion extended for hours, reflecting the depth of sorrow and frustration felt by the student body.
The unfortunate incident took place as Akeredolu, a well-liked figure among his peers, collapsed within his hostel in Akindeko Hall merely days before his final examinations. Rushed to the University Health Centre, his condition rapidly deteriorated, and despite the medical staff's dedicated efforts involving CPR, oxygen, and injections, Akeredolu's life could not be saved. This sudden loss catalyzed an outpouring of emotion, compelling students to rally together in protest.
A witness, recounting the events, shared, "We rushed the young man to the health centre around 8:30 pm. However, upon our arrival, a power outage occurred. Despite the medical team's vigorous attempts, which included CPR, oxygen, and injections, the power remained unavailable throughout the entire treatment process."
In response to the unfolding developments, the Director of Corporate Communication at the university, Adegbenro Adebanjo, released an official statement shedding light on the circumstances. Adebanjo clarified, "In light of certain concerns about the services offered at the University Health Centre, students engaged in a protest on Friday, August 25, 2023. It's important to note that the protest was not a direct reaction to the student's demise."
He further explained that during a meeting with the university's management, initiated at the Vice Chancellor's request, student representatives raised issues related to accessing services at the health centre. The university administration acknowledged these concerns and vowed to systematically address them. The commitment was made to consistently review and implement corrective measures to ensure student satisfaction and the seamless functioning of the health center services.
