No less than 150 million Nigerians risk being defrauded in the financial system according to the Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta.

Danbatta said this during the inauguration of a multi-sectorial committee on e-fraud in Abuja. Punch reported that recent data released by Enhancing Financial Innovation and Access disclosed that over 150 million Nigerians were included in the financial system.

The NCC boss stressed that the integration of mobile applications with online payment platforms and other financial resources had made Nigerians more prone to financial fraud.

New data privacy compliance considerations in Cross Border M&A

Dembatta advised that to effectively combat electronic fraud, customer service and fraud operations teams in banks and the mobile network operators need to tighten up their processes and guidelines on how to detect potential fraudulent activities.

Methods put in place to combat fraud: Danbatta disclosed that the NCC is in a partnership with the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and other relevant agencies to fight e-fraud. He also stressed that a committee on Electronic Banking is currently working towards implementing technical and operational solutions to fight the menace posed by e-fraud.

Danbatta, who was represented by Adeleke Adewolu, said that phishing and social engineering had made e-fruad even more prevalent and easier.

“Mobile apps as a whole are now quite easy for hackers and cyber-criminals to hijack or corrupt, making them tools for fraudsters to steal personal credentials, impersonate genuine bank account holders, and gain illicit access to funds.bPhishing tactics and social engineering ploys such as illegal SIM swap are part and parcel of the online fraud mechanism, regardless of whether the transactions are conducted via mobile phone, desktop browser, or point of presence.”

Recall that NCC had previously made a move to checkmate cyber securities issues in Nigeria whilst keeping in touch with global best practices by launching cyber-crime control centres (known as Emergency Control Centres) across the country.

The 2020 Grammy Awards nomination list has been released and its a big win for Nigeria because Burna Boy's boy 'African Giant' album made the list.

Lizzo led the pack with eight nods, while Billie Eillish and Lil Nas X took the second spot with six nominations each for the 62nd Grammy Awards which will be held on January 26 at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Burna Boy was nominated in the World Music album category alongside African music legend Angelique Kidjo.

Jose Mourinho has been hired as the next head coach of Tottenham Hotspur, the English soccer club has announced. 

The Portuguese coach will replace Mauricio Pochettino, who was fired just six months after leading the London-based team to the Champions League final.

In an official statement by the club, 'we are delighted to announce the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Head Coach on a contract that runs until the end of the 2022/23 season. Jose is one of the world’s most accomplished managers having won 25 senior trophies.

He is renowned for his tactical prowess and has managed FC Porto, Inter Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United.

He has won a domestic title in a record four different countries (Portugal, England, Italy and Spain) and is one of only three managers to have won the UEFA Champions League twice with two clubs, FC Porto in 2004 and Inter Milan in 2010.

He is also a three-time Premier League Champion with Chelsea (2005, 2006, 2015).

Commenting on the appointment, Chairman Daniel Levy said: “In Jose we have one of the most successful managers in football. He has a wealth of experience, can inspire teams and is a great tactician. He has won honours at every club he has coached. We believe he will bring energy and belief to the dressing room.”

Speaking on his appointment, Jose said: “I am excited to be joining a Club with such a great heritage and such passionate supporters. The quality in both the squad and the academy excites me. Working with these players is what has attracted me.”

Kanye West who made a special appearance at Pastor Joel Osteen's Lakewood mega church in Houston on Sunday November 17, announced that he is greatest artist God ever created.

The rapper who reaffirmed his dedication to Christianity, told the crowd of about 16,000 at Lakewood Church that the “devil stole all the good producers, all the good musicians, all the good artists, all the good designers."

"Now, the greatest artist that God has ever exist- uh, created is now working for Him," the hip-hop star said, laughing good-naturedly as seen in a viral video.

"I know that God has been calling me for a long time and the Devil has been distracting me for a long time," he said, drawing applause. And when I was at my lowest point, God was there with me, and sending me visions and inspiring me.

"There's documentations of me drawing a church and...start a church in the middle of Calabasas," he said. "And even after that I went and made The Life of Pablo album. I said, 'This is a gospel album,' and I didn't totally know how to make a gospel album and the Christians that were around were too, I would say, beaten into submission by society to not speak up and profess the Gospel to, you know, to me because I was a superstar. At one point, Kanye found an audience member disruptive and politely told them, "Excuse me. I go into these streams of consciousness when I'm talking and when you're speaking in the middle of it, it distracts me. Luis Enrique has been re-appointed as the manager of Spain.

His re-appointment comes just five months after he quit his role as Spain manager when his daughter, Xanita, 9, died from bone cancer in August.

Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales confirmed his return saying 'the doors of the federation and the national team will remain open to him'.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Rubiales said: 'Today we can confirm that Luis Enrique will return to his position.'

Enrique's assistant, Robert Moreno, took charge in his absence and oversaw Spain's march to the Euro 2020 finals.

Rubiales added on Tuesday: 'Luis Enrique can choose his own staff.'

Enrique who first took charge of Spain for the first time in July last year won eight of 10 matches and fell to two defeats to England and Croatia during his previous tenure.

The 49-year-old, who was formally the coach of Spanish giants, Barcelona, will now lead Spain to next year's European Championship finals and 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Blackface has filed a legal suit against his former bandmate, 2face Idibia, for alleged song theft.

The singers who were members of the now defunct music group, Plantashun Boiz, have been in a long battle over who should have rights to the classic song, African Queen, which 2Face sang and released in 2004. Blackface has for many years laid claim to the song.

Senator Dino Melaye has described what Kogi State elections on Saturday, November 16th as a civil war and not an election. 

Melaye, who contested for the Senatorial seat for Kogi West District which was declared inconclusive, said the Kogi ‘civil war’ claimed 16 lives. He said he would report Yahaya Bello, Smart Adeyemi, Sunday Faleke and others to the international community and then proceed to Hague.

“What we had in Kogi is no election, what we had was a civil war that has claimed 16 lives so far. I will report Bello, Smart Adeyemi, Taofik, Speaker Kolawole and Sunday Faleke to the international community and then proceed to Hague. This i promise,” Melaye tweeted.

He also alleged that the total registered voters for Okene LGA was 118,543 and that the PVCs collected was 48,065, saying that INEC announced that APC scored 112,764 votes, which exceeded PVCs collected with 64,543 votes.

The Department of State Services DSS, today said they fear publisher and convener of Revolution Now protest, Omoyele Sowore, might be knocked down by a moving vehicle if he is released from their custody, Sahara Reporters reports.

Sowore has been in DSS custody despite fulfilling his bail conditions. There have been various demands by the civil society groups and other Nigerians for the agency to respect the rule of law and release Sowore since he has fulfilled his bail conditions.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja this morning, the spokesperson for the agency, Peter Afunanya, said Sowore's lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), was yet to come to its office to receive Sowore.

"We cannot just release Sowore and ask him to go because he may be knocked down by a vehicle at the gate." Afunanya said

The DSS spokesperson noted that Falana had not been to the headquarters of the service since the activist was granted bail, a claim the popular rights lawyer vehemently rejects.

Sowore was arrested in Lagos on August 3rd after he called for a revolutionary protest.

Despite the negative reactions trailing the passage of the Finance Bill, the National Assembly is bent on holding a joint public hearing on the bill tomorrow.

According to Punch, many financial experts have expressed their discomfort towards the bill that could see a spike in Value Added Tax, (VAT) Company Income Tax and other taxes.

The Details: However, Solomon Adeola, Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance said the bill is not about increment in VAT but other things like the amendment of seven acts of the National Assembly as well as the removal of taxes for some sectors in the economy.

Adeola noted that the deliberation would comprise of Senate and House of Representatives Committees on Finance. He urged concerned parties to be ready to air their views on the bill.

“The bill is targeted at reforming our tax regime and will involve amendments of seven Acts of the Parliament namely; Petroleum Profit Tax, Custom and Excise Tariff Act, Company Income Tax Act, Personal Income Tax Act, Value Added Tax, Stamp Duties Act and Capital Gain Tax.

“Studying the executive bill that was referred to my committee after passing second reading on the floor of the senate, I realised that there are a lot of ignorance and limited knowledge of the content and import of the Finance Bill.

“It is not only meant to increase revenue for the government but to also remove some conflicting and confusing aspects of our laws that had given rise to legal disputations in the past leading to huge loses of revenue for government,” he said.

The President forwarded the Finance Bill 2019 for passage into law in pursuant to Sections 58 and 59 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

The Finance Bill has four strategic objectives, in terms of achieving incremental but necessary changes to our fiscal laws. These objectives are:

promoting fiscal equity by mitigating instances of regressive taxation;

reforming domestic tax laws to align with global best practices;

introducing tax incentives for investments in infrastructure and capital markets; and

supporting Micro, Small and Medium-sized businesses in line with our Ease of Doing Business Reforms.

The Soul Train Awards 2019 held last night, November 17, in Las Vegas.

The annual event was hosted by Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold.

The winners include Cardi B, Beyonce, Drake, Chris Brown, Lizzo, and more.

"No Guidance," Chris Brown's song featuring Drake, led the winners Sunday night at the 2019 BET Soul Train Awards, prevailing in a total of three categories.

"No Guidance" was named song of the year, best dance performance and best collaboration performance at the awards show.

Meanwhile, Lizzo took home two awards, one for video of the year for "Juice" and another for album/mixtape of the year for "Cuz I Love You".

Cardi B took home the Rhythm & Bars (formerly best hip-hop song of the year) for "Money". H.E.R was tapped as best R&B/soul female artist. Khalid took home the honor of best R&B/soul male artist.

Beyonce won the Ashford and Simpson Songwriter's Award for her songwriting and vocals on "Brown Skin Girl".

In addition, Summer Walker was named best new artist, Trevor Jackson won the Soul Train Certified and Kirk Franklin went home with the best gospel/inspirational award.

Kogi West Senatorial election which was conducted on Saturday November 16, has been declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The election was declared inconclusive by the returning officer Professor Olayinde Lawal who disclosed that the margin between Smart Adeyemi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is lower than the 43,127 registered voters in 53 polling units of 20 registration areas in the zone where elections were canceled.

He disclosed that the margin between the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Smart Adeyemi and that of the Peoples Democratic Party, Senator Dino Melaye is 20,570. Professor Olayinde Lawal announced that Mr Adeyemi polled a total of 80,118 votes, while Senator Melaye got 59,548 votes from the seven Local Government Areas in the senatorial district.

Professor Lawal said INEC will announce a new date for the supplementary election in the 53 polling units before a winner can be returned. This came after Senator Dino Melaye rejected the results.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Bayelsa State, David Lyon, winner of the state 2019 governorship election which held on Saturday November 16th.

Faraday Orumwese, Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin and the returning officer in the election, announced this in the early hours of today Monday, November 18th. Orumwese stated that  Lyon polled 352,552 votes to defeat Duoye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 143, 172 votes.

The total number of registered voters was announced as 922, 562 and the number of accredited voters was put at 517,883.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Monday, November 18th declared the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate, Yahaya Bello as the winner of the governorship election in Kogi State on Saturday.  

Bello polled a massive 406,222 votes to defeat his contestant, Musa Wada of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, who scored 189,704 votes to emerge second. With the result, Bello has been re-elected for a second term in office. 

INEC’s Returning Officer for the election and Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Professor Ibrahim Garuba, said Bello had been declared winner, having scored the highest number of votes during the poll conducted on Saturday. 

Umar said the total number of cancelled is 149,576 and that the margin of lead is 216,518. Also, Mrs. Natasha Akpoti of the Social Democratic Party SDP came third in the exercise with 9,482. INEC had on Sunday evening suspended further collation of results till today.

19 Local Governments had been collated yesterday while results for Ibaji and Lokoja were being awaited. When collation resumed this morning at about 9.30am, the Returning Officer for Dekina made clarifications on why votes were cancelled in certain poling units in the Local Government.   

After the clarifications, Garbadeen Olugbenga, the Returning Officer for Ibaji gave result of the LG. According to him, the APC won in the Local Government having polled 12,682 votes while the PDP polled 10,594 votes. He said the total registered voters were 66,675 but that only 25,598 of them were accredited, as the total votes cast in the area were 25,258. In Lokoja, the Returning Officer said there were 137,301 registered voters, but that only 34,897 were accredited. In Ibaji, APC scored 19,451 votes while PDP garnered 11,059 votes. 

During the collation, INEC announced cancellation of votes in many Polling Units and many Local Governments across the state. Ballot box snatching, violence, over-voting and fighting were among reasons preferred for the cancellation. 25 political parties participated in the election.

Meanwhile the PDP and Wada at media briefing yesterday rejected the result, describing it as a ruse that would be challenged at the tribunal. The party alleged widespread violations of the Electoral Act. Also, the party, through its agent, Capt. Joe Agada refused to sign the final copy of the result as a protest against its outcome.
