At 182m, Nigeria has the world’s 7th largest population ...half of this population is young and mostly unemployed

The world’s most populous black nation — Nigeria — now has an estimated population of 182 million, half of whom are young and in need of jobs.
At this rate, Nigeria has the world’s seventh largest and fastest growing population among the world’s ten most populous countries.
Bloomberg quoted the Director General of Nigeria’s National Population Commission, Mr Ghaji Bello, as saying that the latest estimate is based on the population of 140 million which was recorded about ten years ago during the country’s last census.
According to Bello, an annual growth rate of 3.5% was deduced based on variables such as rising life expectancy rate and a steadily declining infant mortality rate.
The growing youthful population is putting a strain on a struggling economy
Nigerians within the age of fourteen are said to account for some forty percent (40%) of the population. These are school-aged children whose teaming presence is putting a greater demand on Nigeria to provide health and educational facilities.
Unfortunately, the country is struggling to do this, no thanks to an ailing economy and the lack of political will by those in power to take decisive action.

But there are some prospects with this youthful population
According to the Director General of the National Population Commission, Nigeria’s youthful population are assets inasmuch as they are liabilities. He said Government must quickly figure out a way to ensure that the youths become gainfully employed adults in the nearest future.
This is imperative, considering that much of the country’s young graduates are either completely unemployed or underemployed.
“The implication is that they’re assets, they’re the future of our country. But they’re also liabilities.
“We need to know how to plan for their transition from youths to the next category. It has implications for education, health, and security, particularly in our environment where you have a lot of employment.” -Bello

A future census in the nearest future…
Mr Bello said that he is hopeful that the Government will soon fix a new date for a national census. Earlier plans to hold one in 2018 was delayed by the toppling of the previous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Meanwhile, in a bid to ensure that figures obtained from any future census are accurate, Bello said that several measures are being put in place.

U.S raises alarm over $1.3 billion investment in Nigeria

United States High Commission Consul-General, F. John Bray has raised an alarm over threat to American businesses in Nigeria worth $1.3 billion.
The Consul-General who was speaking at a forum organised by the Lagos Chamber of Commerce & Industry (LCCI), listed instability in the exchange rate, policy inconsistency, poor electricity, dearth of infrastructure, regulatory and security issues as major challenges American investors in Nigeria are facing.
Bray lamented that American investors have issues with how policies are made and changed, noting that it has the capacity to discourage investors into the country.
He cited regulatory issues, such as the one involving MTN, which had led to the directive for the telco to return cash allegedly ferried out of the country without recourse to laid down procedures. He further noted that such an incident has the capacity to discourage any investor as there seems not to be a clear-cut obedience to rule of law to protect investors.
Also speaking at the forum, Ms. Laure Beaufil, Deputy High Commissioner, British High Commission, revealed that out of the £400 million United Kingdom investment in Africa, Nigeria has a large chunk of it but regretted that UK investors are sometimes confused as to the risks inherent in investing in the country and how to mitigate them.
There is a growing concern that foreign investors’ investment into the country has taken a dip. Last week the CBN in a statement revealed that the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Nigeria fell to N379.84 billion ($1.2 billion) in the first half of the year from N532.63 billion ($1.7 billion) a year earlier. It also announced that two global banks HSBC and UBS have shut offices in Nigeria.

NURTW threatens to join strike the nationwide NLC strike tomorrow

Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, the Chairman of the Lagos State Branch of the Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) announced today that the union would join the planned NLC strike if government and labour failed to resolve their differences.
“We are an affiliate of the NLC, we shall obey its directives. So we have no choice than to join the strike anytime we’re called upon to do so,” Agbede said.
Nigerians are waiting anxiously to know the outcome of a last minute dialogue between government and organized labour over a nationwide strike, scheduled for November 6 by labour unions, arising from disagreements with government over a national minimum wage.
Labour has demanded N30, 000 but the Federal Government insists it can only pay N24, 000 while state governments offered to pay N22, 500.

#GandujeGate: Court stops Kano State Assembly from investigating bribery allegation against Governor Ganduje

A State High Court sitting in Kano has issued an interim injunction restraining the Kano State House of Assembly from investigating the bribery allegation against Governor Abdullahi Ganduje.
The presiding judge, Justice A.T. Badamasi gave the order on Monday while ruling on an ex-parte application by one Muhammad Zubair, the National Coordinator of ‘Lawyers for Sustainable Democration of Nigeria’. Justice Badamasi granted the application filed on behalf of the plaintiff by his counsel, Mr Nuraini Jimoh.
Joined as defendants in the suit are the Kano State House of Assembly, the House committee investigating the allegation against Governor Ganduje, and the Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice in the state. He held that the respondents were served before the close of work today while the hearing of the case should be accelerated.
Justice Badamasi also issued a four-day ultimatum for the respondents to respond to the application and ordered the parties involved to ‘maintain status quo ante’ pending the hearing of the motion on notice.  He thereafter adjourned the case till Monday next week for the hearing.

'There is no part of the country I haven’t been to' - President Buhari

Today in Abuja, President Buhari reassured Nigerians that his administration will sustain massive investments to upgrade and develop the country’s transport and power infrastructure.
He spoke when he received members of the Association of Retired Career Ambassadors of Nigeria (ARCAN) led by Ambassador Oladapo Fafowora. The President told the retired Ambassadors that Nigerians will never forget the ‘‘lost opportunity between 1999 and 2015,’’ when the nation had huge resources at its disposal.
''There is no part of the country I haven’t been to, having attempted to be President four times. I know the condition of our roads. The rails were literally killed, there was no power despite the admittance of some previous leadership that they spent $16 billion on the sector.
Today, we are getting our priorities right and we believe that of the three fundamental issues we campaigned on security, the economy and fighting corruption, we have remained very relevant and Nigerians believe we have achieved something,'' the President said.
President Buhari also used the occasion to appreciate the People’s Republic of China for financing some of the rail and power projects in the country through concessionary loans.
''I will do my best to see that where there are possibilities of making a quick improvement on infrastructure, we will do it,'' he said.
President Buhari also appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to consider what this government inherited and the more it is doing with fewer resources in putting the economy right.
The President took note of some concerns raised by the retired Ambassadors including an appeal for the adjustment of their pension entitlements, retention of diplomatic passport for retired career ambassadors, allocation of land for ARCAN headquarters in Abuja and adequate funding of the Foreign Affairs ministry, among others.

#GandujeGate: 'I did not collect, has not collected and will never collect bribe’ - Kano State governor tells investigative committee

Yesterday, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State told the State House of Assembly that he “did not collect, has not collected and will never collect bribe from anybody” as he was recently portrayed in a series of video recordings that went viral on social media.
Ganduje who had been summoned to appear before a seven-man investigative committee set up by the assembly to probe allegations that he collected a $5million cash bribe from contractors sent his defence in writing.
The letter was signed and delivered to the committee by Information,Youth and Culture Commissioner, Muhammad Garba. The governor, in the four paragraph letter, said:

Re: invitation to respond to a bribery allegation against His Excellency, kano.
Your Correspondence No: KMHA/ADMIN/COM/Vol.1/12 dated 31st October 2018: I have the instruction of His Excellency, the Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje (OFR) to write as follows:
That His Excellency, the Governor of Kano State categorically and unequivocally denied the allegation of collecting bribe from contractors as alleged by the publisher of the online newspaper, Daily Nigerian.
That His Excellency, the Governor of Kano state did not collect, has not collected and will never collect bribe from anybody whosoever and for whatever purposes.
That the allegation levelled against him is injurious falsehood designed purposely to tarnish his long-established good reputation, reduce his popularity for some political opponents to take undue advantage in the forth-coming general election.
That caution should be exercised by handling this allegation putting into consideration the antecedents of the accuser on similar accusations against leaders and rulers in the state, particularly the allegation made against the former Governor of Kano State, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau and the Sarkin Kano, Malam Muhammad Sanusi 11, which turned out to be false accusation.

Yours Faithfully,
Malam Muhammad Garba,
Commissioner for Information Kano state,

For the Governor?
I so submit.
The commissioner was not cross –examined since he was merely representing the governor but the committee chairman said:
“we cannot go into cross-examination with you. We can only receive a written response from the governor, and that is what we can work with because you are not the governor. The accusation is directly against him. So sending his representation, like we said in the letter, will be in writing and we accept it from you if you tender it before the Committee.
“There are so many questions you may not be able to answer because you are not the one who is being accused of the bribery allegation against the governor.”
The House had previously interrogated Jafar Jafar editor of the Daily Nigeria who posted the video recordings.
The governor’s counsel, Ibrahim Muktar, who accompanied Garba to the House expressed appreciation to the Committee for the way it was ”conducting this proceedings which shows fairness to everybody, fairness to the public, fairness to the accuser, and fairness to the person being accused that is the Governor of Kano state.”
He added: “This concept of fair hearing can be seen right from day one when commenced the proceedings till today. We have seen transparency in everything.
“We have seen fair treatment about the parties concerned. So, we have appreciated on behalf of the general public. I just want to draw the attention of the House probably to the way your information is being taken out to the media which is very important.
“Just this morning when I was coming to this particular meeting, I had a reporter reporting that only a single member out of the seven members of the Committee is around—that only one member of the Committee is available. All other members are not available. This was a live broadcast of one of the local radio stations in the state. When I came in, to my surprise, I see all the members sitting and waiting for the parties.
“Secondly, the way this invitation letter which was sent to His Excellency was reported was not good. But the way the letter was written showed fairness, it gave options as rightly stated by the Hon. Commissioner of Information. Several option were given either for His Excellency to send his representative, right formally to the Committee or appear in person together with his lawyers, but the way it was reported that Governor has only one option and that is for him to appear before this Committee.
“And with due respect Mr. Chairman, this is mischievous because if the Governor fails to appear today in person, that means the message to the general public is that the Governor is in contempt of request made by the Committee. So I am just drawing the attention of the chairman and members of the Committee to this because some people are trying to tamper with the way you are conducting your fair and transparent proceedings. They do this in order to create a mischief and I am sure that you are not part of it with the way it is transmitted by some mischievous persons.”

Hollywood actor, Alec Baldwin arrested, charged for assault and harassment in New York

On Friday, Hollywood actor and TV presenter Alec Baldwin was arrested in New York for allegedly punching a 49-year-old man in the face during a parking dispute.
The 60-year-old who lives in downtown Manhattan with his second wife and their four young children, was arrested in Greenwich Village.
“Police got a call around 1:30 pm (1730 GMT) regarding an assault in progress. When we got there, we discovered that it looked like two individuals were fighting over a parking spot,” the spokeswoman said.
The younger man had already parked his vehicle and was attempting to purchase a parking ticket, when he got into a dispute with Baldwin, “who then punched him in the face,” the officer said. She said the unnamed man was taken to hospital in “stable” condition, while Baldwin was in custody awaiting charges.
Baldwin is well known for his hot temper and for impersonating Trump on satirical US television show “Saturday Night Live.”
In 2014, he was detained by New York police for riding his bicycle the wrong way down a street. In late 2013, NBC scrapped his late-night chat show after he allegedly subjected a photographer to a homophobic slur outside his apartment on the day that a Canadian actress convicted of stalking him was jailed.

Akon seriously considering running for President against Donald Trump in 2020

American-born Senegalese singer, Akon, is seriously considering running for President against Donald Trump in 2020.
Speaking with Newsweek about facing off against Donald Trump in a recent interview, the 45-year-old said,
"I’ve been thinking about running for 2020 very seriously. But I didn’t want to just do it because I feel like I want to continue doing what I’m doing and hope that builds me enough momentum [for people] to say, ‘You know what, if you run we’ll support you.’"
On Donald Trump's stance about the future of the country, Akon said "I feel a lot more unsafe," he said.
"I feel unempowered. Honestly, I feel it’s gonna be a fight. I feel like I should be always prepared for the unexpected. I feel very uncomfortable."
He continued, “And I feel a lot of Americans do; even some white Americans feel that way because they’re watching backlash of his decisions. It’s not what’s happening now, because it’s clear it’s creating a whole bunch of divide today. But I think tomorrow that impact is going to be so much more devastating.”
Speaking on how things were under previous President Barack Obama, before Trump took office in January 2017, the singer also added:
“We really came a long way to get people to come together, and look at each other as humans, and work towards a common cause,” he told the magazine. “And now it seems like everything that was done is being undone, with gangs and race groups reemerging. It’s just horrible.”
In a previous interview with Variety, Akon said he felt “personally disappointed” by Trump and reprimanded him and his organization for lack of empathy, adding that, the present circumstance in America made him think about a keep running for office, he told the magazine, “I’m running for the presidency if I do it. My target is the bully.”

IK Ogbonna finally addresses rumours his wife Sonia has walked away from their marriage

Nollywood actor, IK Ogbonna has finally addressed rumours that his wife Sonia has walked away from their marriage.
Recall that in September, the Colombian beauty sparked rumours after she dropped his last name from all her social media accounts. The mother of one who is a life coach, a blogger, and a relationship expert edited her name from Sonia Ogbonna Morales to Sonia LaReina.
At one point, she took to her Snapchat account to flash her ringless finger, but in a recent chat with Saturday Beats, IK Ogbonna dismissed the marriage breakup rumours.
The actor noted that his wife is an intelligent woman and gave her credit for their successful marriage because it was difficult being married to someone like him due to the nature of his job.
“My wife is gifted; she is a very intelligent woman. You cannot sit down with her and not learn something; she is very expressive, she expresses herself regardless of what people think or say. It takes two people to make things work; on her own part, she does her best and she will keep doing her best. Being married to someone like me is very difficult because my career takes a toll on me. I am hardly around and available to give her enough attention as a woman, but I will keep trying.
“Most of the time, for a marriage to really work, it takes two people, but the woman has to be patient. So far so good, she has been doing a great job and I will give her all the credit.
“Any celebrity out there hardly has time because we work round the clock but whatever time I have no matter how little it feels, I spend it with my family. It is within that little time I go out with them and take pictures with them; that is when I go for events with them. I go to events with my wife, not to flaunt her but because in the little time I have to be in that event, I’ll rather be with her than go alone. It is never enough but I will always like to give it as much as I can,” he said.
He also accused some of his followers on social media platforms of spreading hate comments.
“Some followers are there to hate, some get inspired, some are even there to do ‘eye-service’, and some of them are there as the press, just to pick things to gossip about. I have had a lot of people that come to me and tell me that following me has inspired them greatly; these types of feedbacks give me joy.”
“In my little way, I try to show people how to love and treat their family and be better people. I might not be right all the time with the things I express, but people can still learn from them,” he added.

All airlines operating in and out of Nigeria Airports will be affected as FAAN declares its intention to join the nationwide strike declared by NLC

Anyone who has plans of travelling around and out of the country might be unable to do so come Tuesday, November 6th as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has declared its intention to join in the nationwide strike declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress over FG's refusal to meet its minimum wage demand.
Talks on a new wage have reached deadlock after state governors said they couldn't guarantee the payment of N30,000 wage to workers. A court had ruled on Friday that the strike be cancelled, as it would jeopardize citizens' livelihood. But the NLC insists it is well within the ambit of the law to embark on the strike.
FAAN said in a statement it was standing with the labour union, and will shut down operations in compliance with the nationwide strike.
"All airlines operating in/out of Nigeria Airports shall be affected by this industrial action. We appeal to your good sense of understanding in this regard," the organisation said in a bulletin to its workers.
