Ogun State Government's Bold Move to Ensure Safer Schools and Marketplaces

In a significant effort to enhance safety around schools and marketplaces, the Ogun State Government has launched an initiative targeting illegal structures. This Safer School Initiative focuses on creating secure learning environments by eliminating potential criminal hideouts.

Farooq Akintunde, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, revealed that notices were issued about six months ago to owners of approximately 200 illegal shanties, structures, and makeshift shops. Despite these warnings, compliance was minimal.

The government’s action saw bulldozers moving into areas like Kuto, Idi-Aba, Oke Ijeun, and Panseke to clear the unauthorized constructions. Key locations affected included St. John Primary School in Kuto, Nawairudeen Primary and Secondary School in Oje Ijeun, and Government Technical College in Idi-Aba.

Akintunde, who led the taskforce, also directed the removal of makeshift shops in Panseke that were obstructing traffic.

He explained that the initiative's primary goal is to maintain a distraction-free learning environment for students. The illegal structures often double as criminal hideouts, posing significant risks such as kidnapping. This proactive measure underscores the government’s dedication to protecting its citizens, especially children.

Akintunde also issued a strong warning to school administrators who allocate spaces to traders illegally. He stressed that such actions are against the law and carry severe consequences. Educators are reminded that their role is to teach, not to lease government property, and they should avoid any unauthorized dealings to prevent legal issues.
