Access Holding Plc has officially announced the tragic passing of its esteemed Chief Executive Officer, Herbert Wigwe. Sunday Ekwochi, the company secretary, conveyed this heartbreaking news in a statement released on Sunday. The statement revealed that Wigwe, along with his wife and son, tragically lost their lives in a helicopter accident on Friday, February 9, 2024, in the United States of America.
The bank expressed profound sadness over the loss of Wigwe, describing him as a dynamic leader with an indomitable spirit. The statement read, "It is with deep sadness that the Board of Directors of Access Holdings Plc announces the passing of Dr. Herbert Wigwe, CFR, the company’s founding Group Chief Executive Officer and former Group Managing Director of its flagship subsidiary Access Bank Plc."
Wigwe's untimely demise marks a significant loss for the Access Family, as expressed by Abubakar Jimoh, Chairman of Access Holdings. Jimoh fondly remembered Wigwe as a close friend and outstanding individual, acknowledging his exceptional intellect, personal qualities, and extensive business acumen.
In accordance with company policy, the Board will soon appoint an Acting Group Chief Executive Officer, ensuring continuity while honoring Wigwe's legacy of growth and operational excellence.
Herbert Wigwe, his wife, son, and others perished in the tragic helicopter crash in California, United States. Wigwe, aged 58, hailed from Rivers State, born on August 15, 1966.
