Pope Francis was rescued by firefighters after he got stuck
in an elevator for 25 minutes, ahead of his weekly address on Sunday, August
31.
“I have to apologise for being late. I was trapped in a lift
for 25 minutes, there was a power outage but then the firemen came,” the
smiling 82-year old pontiff apologized to crowds gathered in St. Peter's
Square, Vatican City on Sunday, after showing up late for his weekly address.
Pope Francis said a “drop in tension” caused the elevator to
block. He said that Holy See firefighters rescued him and asked the people in
the square to applaud them.
He then went on to challenge governments to take “drastic
measures” to combat global warming and reduce the use of fossil fuels, saying
the world was experiencing a climate emergency.
