Ex-VP Atiku Abubakar cries as he's gifted PDP forms to contest for President

The presidential aspirant was pictured wiping his eyes with a white handkerchief to fight back tears.
Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, fought back tears shortly after obtaining the Expression of Interest and Nomination forms to contest in the presidential primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to a report by Vanguard, the Atiku Support Groups (ASG) bought the forms, a total of N12 million, and presented them to him at his Presidential Campaign Office in Abuja on Friday, August 31, 2018.
The former vice president was overwhelmed with emotion when a member of the ASG, Adekemi Adesanya, was describing the terrible state of affairs in the country. The presidential aspirant was pictured wiping his eyes with a white handkerchief to fight back tears.
When it was his turn to speak, Atiku said the fact that he is trusted to provide solutions to Nigeria's numerous challenges encourages him to work for a better nation.
He said, "The event today is significant and historic because this is the only time in my political career that young men and women in this country have come together without my knowledge or even consent to contribute their own hard-earned money to buy me an Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms.
"You could have seen that one of the ladies who spoke virtually succeeded in getting me to weep. This is because she aptly described the challenges every Nigerian is facing in this country today and she believed honestly and sincerely from the bottom of her heart that I could be an instrument of addressing those challenges.
"So, for such a woman to believe that I have got those leadership qualities and including those of you who have brought out your monies to buy this form, is one of the most serious challenges I have ever faced in my political career.
"And believe me, addressing those challenges‎ is possible because we have brought young men and women, Nigerians who have got the talents, who have got the education, who have got the experience, who have got all what it take to honestly turn this country around."
Atiku is one in a long list of aspirants contesting for the PDP presidential ticket ahead of the 2019 presidential election.
He faces competition in Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, Gombe State governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, and former governors, Sule Lamido, Attahiru Bafarawa, Jonah Jang, Ahmed Makarfi, as well as Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Fela Durotoye emerges consensus candidate of PACT coalition

Presidential aspirant, Fela Durotoye, has been elected the consensus candidate of the Presidential Aspirants Coming Together (PACT) coalition to contest in the 2019 presidential election.
Many aspirants had met one month ago to form PACT with the resolve to form a strong coalition and support a consensus candidate for the 2019 presidential election.
The aspirants initially involved in the coalition included Kingsley Moghalu, Yele Sowore, Dr Thomas-Wilson Ikubese, Ahmed Buhari, Tope Fasua, and Sina Fagbenro-Byron.
Others are Eragbe Anslem, Jaye Gaskia, Mathias Tsado, Victor Ani-Laju, Alistair Soyode, Godstime Sidney Iroabuchi, Clement Jimbo, and Elishama Ideh.
A month after that meeting, the coalition has presented Durotoye as its consensus candidate amid reports that aspirants such as Sowore have pulled out.
Even though the coalition started with 18 aspirants, only 13 showed up for the election on Thursday, and Moghalu and another aspirant walked out in protest before Durotoye was elected winner.
In a statement signed by Durotoye, he expressed gratitude for his emergence as the winner and urged those that have left the coalition to work with him.
His statement read, "It is with profound gratitude and great humility that I accept your nomination as the Consensus Candidate of the Presidential Aspirants Coming Together (PACT).
"I would like to honor all the members of PACT, 18 leaders, all uniquely qualified and able to represent 190 million Nigerians at the highest office in our nation; who displayed great humility; understanding that none of us can win as individuals, but by coming together as a team, we bring our unique abilities and diverse strengths to the table; but most importantly, being honorable to put the country first and themselves last. You are true nation builders and our nation owes you a great debt of gratitude.
"Today, I would like to extend a hand to those who have left our coalition and welcome those of similar ideologies who are yet to join us, we are stronger together.
"I take this nomination as a Consensus Candidate with great sense of responsibility; knowing that I and our generation have been entrusted with a mandate to show Nigerians the kind of leadership they truly desire and deserve and to inspire the hope of a better future; a New Nigeria.
"The 2019 elections will be a referendum between our past and our future; between the same old change and a New hope, the old and the young, politics and good governance, joblessness and jobs, politicians and nation builders and between experience and expertise.
"We don't expect it to be easy. We will be held to higher standards than the establishment, our methods and conduct scrutinized more closely to determine if we are the same old wine, repackaged in new wine skins.
"We assure you that we are nothing like what our nation has experienced over the last 58 years, but we will earn your trust, and eventually, your votes.
"I am not arrogant to claim that i have all the answers, but I am humble enough to say that I will listen to all your questions.
"And with such a great team beside me, the hopes and dreams of Nigerians before me & by the Grace of God above me, we will deliver a New Nigeria, starting on May 29th, 2019."
Durotoye, a leadership consultant, will contest on the platform of the Alliance for a New Nigeria (ANN).

Not Too Young To Run distances self from Saraki’s declaration

The Not Too Young To Run movement has distanced itself from the Senate President Bukola Saraki’s declaration to join the presidential race.
The group, in a statement signed by Samson Itodo, said it had only invited Saraki and other chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party to a town hall meeting as part of efforts to ensure that youths are given some concessions ahead of the 2019 general elections.
It said it was shocked when Saraki seized the opportunity to declare his presidential bid, thereby compromising the event.
The statement read in part, “Whilst addressing participants at the town hall meeting, Senator Saraki declared his intention to run for the office of the President in the 2019 elections.
“The movement wishes to express its disappointment with Senator Saraki for usurping a platform designed for young aspirants to dialogue with party leadership to advance his personal political ambition.
“We strongly condemn this act by the President of the Senate.”
“The movement restates its commitment to sustain its engagement with political parties to ensure youth candidacy and democratic party primaries,” the statement continued; adding, “As noted earlier, the movement reaffirms its identity as a non-partisan citizen-led movement dedicated to the defence of democracy, political inclusion and transforming leadership.”
According to the group, the young aspirants advocated a reduction in the cost of party nomination forms and requested the party to uphold internal democracy in the conduct of party primaries,” the statement added.

Modric beats Ronaldo & Salah to win UEFA Player of the Year

The Croatia international's exploits for Los Blancos on their way to a third successive Champions League title have been rewarded with the prize
Luka Modric has been named the UEFA Men's Player of the Year for 2017-18, seeing off competition from Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah.
The Real Madrid midfielder was crowned at the ceremony for the Champions League group stage draw on Thursday.
Modric, who has been with the Spanish side since 2012, featured 11 times as Madrid continued their dominance of the Champions League, scoring once and adding a single assist.
But it was his conviction in possession and ability to turn defence into attack with just one pass that made him so vital to Los Blancos' success.
His former team-mate Ronaldo – who scored 15 goals in last season's competition and winner of the previous two awards – and Liverpool star Salah were considered leading candidates due to their respective displays in attack.
But Modric, who also claimed the Golden Ball at the World Cup, won the most votes from coaches and journalists to seal the award.
"I would like to dedicate this to my coaches and my team-mates, " said Modric.
"They are there in the good moments and also the not so good moments so this is for them."
Champions League winners Madrid dominated the individual awards, winning every single one for the men's game.
Keylor Navas, Sergio Ramos and Ronaldo won the respective accolades for best goalkeeper, defender and forward, while Modric took the prize for most impressive midfielder.

Closely following the top contenders are Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz and Ethiopia’s Betty G who each earned six nominations; while Simi (Nigeria) and Nasty C (South Africa) got on the 5th AFRIMA nominees list with five nominations apiece.
AFRIMA is adding four new awards categories namely African DJ of the Year; Best African Dance/Choreography; African Lyricist/Rapper of the Year and Best African Act in Diaspora, introduced in June 2018 by the African Union and the International Committee of AFRIMA to give room for expansion and inclusiveness in the African music industry.
Commenting on the final nominees list for the 5th AFRIMA and how the jury arrived at finding the best musical works within the year under review, AFRIMA Juror representing Eastern Africa, Tabu Osusa, said,
“This year, AFRIMA registered a record number of entries in its competition. We were very pleased to notice that mostly new talents have entered the competition. The 13 jurors had a hard task going through over 8000 talented and creative entries.
It resulted in heated sessions and far from unanimous decisions. Being an odd number of jurors revealed to be a blessing allowing us to make decisions by the majority.
After a lot of sweat, long discussions and late hours, the jurors designated the best artistes in each given genre. It is now up to the public to go through this process and help to find the new African talents.”

Michael Jackson is earning more in death than he did in life as estate rakes in $74million in one year

King of Pop, Michael Jackson is reportedly earning more in death than he did when he was alive.
The late superstar died in 2009 at the age of 50, following an overdose of the anaesthetic propofol.
Today, August 29, 2018, would have been the King of Pop's 60th birthday, but court papers have revealed his estate netted $74million in a year and his gross earnings since his death are thought to exceed $900 million, according to The Mirror.
The 73-page document filed at a Los Angeles court by executors, including close friends John Branca and John McClain, showed publishing rights from hits like Thriller delivered $2,448,584.99. But his merchandising arm Triumph International brought in the most – $18.8million in the same period.
Spending’s included $10.8million on a house for the children and $85,297.65 for a top-of-the-range Cadillac Escalade for their security team. Budding film director Prince was given a $70,000 truck and a Chevron fuel card on which he spent $9,000.
The children enjoyed five holidays, including to Hawaii, for which they got $28,500 in spending money alone.
It was also revealed that Jackson’s mother Katherine, 88, collected around $1million to cover health bills, allowance and expenses, and $257,379 to run her own home. When she temporarily handed over their guardianship to Michael’s cousin TJ, he got $5,790 every two weeks.
Hayvenhurst, where Michael lived before he bought Neverland, cost $157,000, including $60,000 on rebuilding the main house and installing an alarm.
The court papers state the executors have “disposed of most of the creditors’ claims”, but some debts still remain.
According to the report, the accounts are so complex that the figures are only for the year of 2015 following the claims that Jackson’s estate owes $500million in back taxes.
The estate is trying to negotiate a deal on his bills for the last decade and “true value” of his estate as it's understood the gross earnings since Michael’s death have exceeded $900million.
This means his children Paris, 20, Prince, 21, and Blanket, 16, are living their lives in luxury which they were denied in the last three years of his life.
Before their father died in 2009 with debts of $500million, the Pop king said they were like “vagabonds.”

“2019 election will be free, fair and credible” - President Buhari assures UK Prime Minister, Theresa May

President Buhari today in Abuja assured the UK Prime Minister, Theresa May of his commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections in 2019. In a bilateral meeting with the visiting Prime Minister, he welcomed UK's support at strengthening democratic institutions in the country.
‘‘I assure you that I’m all out for free, fair and credible elections. I’m very pleased that my party is doing very well. The High Commissioner will brief you more. The recent successes in polls in Katsina, Bauchi, and Kogi have boosted our morale greatly. Nigeria has accepted multiparty democracy and that is putting politicians on their toes, forcing them to work harder,’’ he said.
On the anti-corruption campaign, the President applauded the British support to the country, noting that the success of the fight was very important to ordinary people in the country.
"We had great opportunities and resources between 1999 and 2014, due to high oil prices. But when we came in 2015, oil prices plunged to as low as 37 dollars per barrel. What we have been doing since 2015 is to focus on infrastructure development, despite low earnings. Work is ongoing in roads, rail, power, and many others."
On Brexit, President Buhari noted that it provides an opportunity to strengthen the historic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
‘‘We are nervously watching the development about Brexit because we know that the relationship had been on for a long time. I assure you that I am prepared to strengthen the relationship between our two countries.’’
The President also thanked the UK government for the support on security and the fight against insurgency in the North Eastern part of Nigeria, as well as the improved trade relations between both countries. ‘‘I am very grateful to the British government under you leadership for the help in security, particularly your training team that is in our institution in Kaduna,’’ he said.
In her remarks, Prime Minister May, who welcomed the assurance by the Nigerian government on credible elections in 2019, said she was pleased to be in Abuja to continue the ‘‘excellent discussions’’ she started with President Buhari in London in April, this year, particularly on security, trade, asset recovery and the fight against corruption.
‘‘Security and defence cooperation are very important steps to address Boko Haram and Islamic State in West Africa,’’ May said.
On asset recovery, the Prime Minister told President Buhari: ‘‘we do not want to hold anything that belongs to Nigeria people, but we follow the judicial process, which can be slow.’’ The Prime Minister appealed to President Buhari to use his position as ECOWAS Chair to keep the issue of human trafficking on the front burner in the sub-region.
President Buhari and Prime Minister May also witnessed the signing of two agreements: Security and Defence Partnership and Economic Development Forum Agreement

Porn star Stormy Daniels claims Donald Trump lasted "two minutes" in bed

Stormy Daniels, who Donald Trump allegedly had an affair with shortly after his wife Melania gave birth to their son, has claimed that Trump lasted only 2 minutes in bed.
In a Vogue magazine profile published on Tuesday, New York Times reporter, Amy Chozick pushed Stormy to give details about the extramarital affair she says she had with Trump in 2006. But Stormy said there was not much to tell because Trump didn't last that long.
Stormy Daniels said: "How many details can you really give about two minutes. Maybe I’m being generous."
Porn star Stormy Daniels claims Donald Trump lasted "two minutes" in bed
She also said that the sex between her and Trump was consensual and she never felt forced into it.
She told Vogue: "Not once did I ever feel like I was in any sort of physical danger. I’m sure if I would’ve taken off running, he wouldn’t have given chase. And even if I had, there’s no way he could’ve caught me."
She added that Trump wasn’t a bad conversationalist and that he asked good questions about the porn industry, including if adult film stars get royalties and residuals or had a union.
"Businessmen like to talk about business," Daniels said.
Stormy Daniels has received numerous death threats ever since she began speaking about her affair with Trump and revealed that she was paid hush money by Donald Trump's former lawyer to keep silent about her tryst with Trump.
On Aug. 21, Cohen pleaded guilty in Manhattan Federal Court to working at Trump’s direction to pay off two women who claimed to have sex with him. The women are porn star Stormy Daniels and former Playboy model Karen McDougal.

42% of Bank employees now contract staff as fresh graduates settle for less

Data from the National Bureau of Statistics shows Nigerian banks are relying more on contract staff to boost operations.
The recently published data on Sectorial Breakdown of Credit, ePayment Channels and Staff Strength (Q2 2018) shows the banking sector employed a total of 43,955 contract staff as employees. This compares to about 21,837 a year earlier and a 101% increase YOY.
Some key metrics
Total banking sector employees as at 2018 Q2, 101, 861 compared to 89, 608 in the previous quarter. Total banking sector employees were about 77,096 in the first quarter of 2017 and 75, 607 in the second quarter of 2017.
Total employees in the banking sector have now risen by 13.67% quarter on quarter and 34.72% year on year.
Contract staff as a percentage of total employees has risen from 26% at the start of 2017 to about 43.2% in 2018. Contract staffs are now on track to surpass the 50% mark in the next few months.
Before now junior staff’s made up a larger percentage of banking staff. However, in the second quarter of 2018, contract staff jumped from 32,013 in Q1 of 2018 to 43,955 in Q2 of 2018, indicating that banks employed a whopping 11,942 contract staff in the second quarter alone.
Junior staff remains at just over 40k.
Why is this important?
As banks struggle to reign in on high cost to income ratios, the increasing reliance on contract staff is expected to help reduce overheads especially as it relates to personnel cost.
The data confirms banks are now relying more on contract staff to handle routine operational activities while it leaves core banking activities such as trading, treasury, loan making to permanent employees.
Banks that have a higher percentage of contract staff to total staff will likely save more on overheads and can pass these cost savings to shareholders. However, this depends on whether some of the so-called cost savings are being shifted towards executive and senior staff compensation.
In terms of employment opportunities for Nigerian Youth, this suggests the days of getting a bank job straight out of school is diminishing. Except for specialized Graduate Management Trainee programs, most fresh graduates will likely be employed as contract staff.
We also understand a number of newer outsourcing companies are also springing up to provide contract services for the banking industry. Most utility companies in the telecoms and power sector already rely on contract staff for their operations.
Any downsides
For the banking sector, incessant cases of fraud are being linked to contract staff.
In a recent fraud which occurred in tier 2 commercial bank, a staff of the bank informs Nairametrics that some of the contract staff are exposed to core operations of the banks such as cash and cheque handling and also have access to delicate customer information that makes the bank vulnerable to fraudulent activities.
Because of their limited contractual obligations, contract staff easily absconds with little or no recourse to guarantors.

Man Utd 0-3 Tottenham: Lucas Moura scores twice to stun Old Trafford

Lucas Moura scored twice as Tottenham stunned Manchester United with a 3-0 win at Old Trafford on Monday Night Football.
Harry Kane's superb header from a corner (50) and Lucas' tidy finish (52) gave Spurs daylight against a shell-shocked United, after Jose Mourinho made six changes from the side that lost 3-2 at Brighton last week.
Spurs then caught United on the break to add a third through man-of-the-match Lucas' fine finish (85), meaning United have suffered their worst start to a Premier League season since 2014.
Player ratings
Man Utd: De Gea (5), Valencia (5), Shaw (5), Jones (4), Smalling (4), Matic (4), Fred (5), Herrera (5), Pogba (4), Lingard (5), Lukaku (5).
Subs: Sanchez (5), Lindelof (4), Fellaini (5)
Tottenham: Lloris (7), Trippier (7), Rose (6), Alderweireld (7), Vertonghen (7), Dier (6), Dembele (7), Alli (6), Eriksen (7), Moura (9), Kane (8).
Subs: Aurier (NA), Davies (NA), Winks (NA)
Man of the match: Lucas Moura
United have also lost two of their opening three Premier League games for the first time since 1992, while Spurs register their best start since 2009/10.
Most of the early talk surrounded Mourinho's tactics, with Ander Herrera starting on the right side of a central-defensive three and Paul Pogba further up the pitch than in previous weeks.
Danny Rose so nearly handed United an early lead with a loose back-pass, but Romelu Lukaku will feel he should have scored having rolled the ball just wide of the open goal after rounding Hugo Lloris.
Spurs had a strong call for a penalty turned down by Craig Pawson after Jones' clumsy challenge on Moura from behind, with Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville agreeing in the MNF studio that Jones should have been penalised.
Team news
Jose Mourinho made six changes from the side that lost 3-2 at Brighton. Lindelof and Bailly were replaced by Jones and Smalling; Mata, Pereira and Martial were left out of the squad completely, while Valencia, Matic and Herrera came in. Young was also replaced by Lingard.
For Spurs, Lloris started despite his off-field controversy, while Sanchez and Davies dropped out for Rose and Dembele. Lamela was injured in the warm-up, replaced by Amos.
But Spurs went ahead in fine fashion five minutes after the break through Kane's brilliant header into the far corner from Kieran Trippier's corner, Tottenham's first goal at Old Trafford in 433 Premier League minutes.
Lloris turned away a Lukaku effort moments later, but it was 2-0 on 52 minutes through Lucas, turning home from 10 yards into the bottom left corner after Christian Eriksen picked him out.
Spurs had two golden opportunities to make it 3-0 after Mourinho made three quick-fire changes; first, substitute Victor Lindelof's poor back-pass was picked up by Dele Alli, but he could only fire at David de Gea, before Kane headed wide unmarked from six yards after losing Lindelof at a corner.
United piled on the pressure in hope of halving the deficit, but Lucas broke away to get his second and Spurs' third, slipping past Chris Smalling and finishing neatly into the left corner past De Gea.
Mourinho showed respect to the United fans after the game, standing in front of the Stretford End and clapping the home support for over a minute.
Opta stats
This was Man Utd boss Mourinho's biggest home defeat in all competitions as a manager.
This was Manchester United's 50th home defeat in the Premier League.
Mourinho has lost two of his opening three games in a league season for the first time in his career.

Zenith Bank MD reportedly picked up by EFCC

Tier one lender, Zenith Bank Plc may have some explaining to do, as reports indicate the Group Managing Director of Zenith Bank Plc, Peter Amangbo was picked up by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Some other media have declined to specify the name of the bank but essentially carried the same details. The bank is yet to issue a statement pertaining to the issue.
What could be behind the action?
The bank appears to have failed to flag some large cash withdrawals carried out by officials of the Rivers State government. The EFCC has alleged these transactions amount to N117 billion and were carried out over the last three years. Banks by law are mandated to flag such transactions.
Implications
Bank executives being picked up in the country is not a new event. Nnamdi Okonkwo, Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Plc, was in April last year picked up by the EFCC pertaining to funds released by the then Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dieziani Allison Madueke. Access Bank MD Herbert Wigwe was also briefly interrogated by the EFCC in May last year.
Zenith Bank has two Deputy Managing Directors (DMDs) which will enable operations to continue smoothly.
The news, however, could lead to a drop in the bank’s share price as foreign investors are finicky about matters like this. Zenith is one of the stocks largely favoured by foreign investors due to its liquidity.
Zenith Bank is currently trading at N21.95 in today’s trading session on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE).
Results for the half year ended June 2018 show Gross Earnings dropped from N380 billion in 2017 to N322 billion in 2018. Profit before tax increased from N92 billion in 2017 to N107 billion in 2018. Profit after tax rose from N75 billion in 2017 to N81 billion in 2018.

Trump refers to President Buhari as a ''lifeless'' person after April meeting — Financial Times

A new article released by world leading global business publication, Financial Times, claims that US president, Donald Trump, after his meeting with President Buhari on April 30th, told his aides that the Nigerian president was so ''lifeless'' and that he doesn't want to see such a ''lifeless'' person again.
Financial Times quoted Trump as saying this in an article titled Africa looks for something new out of Trump as Kenya president visits the White House.
“The first meeting, with Nigeria’s ailing 75-year-old Muhammadu Buhari in April, ended with the US president telling aides he never wanted to meet someone so lifeless again, according to three people familiar with the matter,” the newspaper claimed.
President Buhari is the first president from Sub-Saharan Africa to meet with the US president.
The Kenyan president will today August 27th, meet with President Trump where they will have bilateral discussions.
The newspaper added that advocates of closer US-Africa ties hope Trump's encounter with the 56-year-old Kenyan president, will foster a better US-Africa relationship.
However, President Trump had praised President Buhari during the joint-press conference after the meeting in April.
“Nigeria has a reputation for very massive corruption. I also know that the President has been able to cut that down very substantially. We talked about that, he is working on it and they have made a lot of progress and I think they will continue to make a lot of progress,” Trump said at the Press conference.
The Presidency is yet to react to this article.

UK Prime Minister, Theresa May kick off her first trip to African continent with a visit to Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya

UK's Theresa May will lead an ambitious trip to Africa this week on her first visit to the continent as Prime Minister. She’ll be the first British Prime Minister to visit Sub-Saharan Africa since 2013, and the first to go to Kenya for over 30 years.
The Prime Minister’s central message will be focused on a renewed partnership between the UK and Africa, which will seek to maximise shared opportunities and tackle common challenges in a continent that is growing at a rapid pace from the Sahara to South Africa.
She will use a speech on the opening day of the visit in Cape Town to set out how to build a partnership side by side with Africa, particularly by bringing the transformative power of private sector trade and investment from the UK to a continent that is home to 16% of the world’s people but just 3% of FDI and 3% of global goods trade.
Prime Minister Theresa May said:
Africa stands right on the cusp of playing a transformative role in the global economy, and as longstanding partners this trip is a unique opportunity at a unique time for the UK to set out our ambition to work even closer together.
A more prosperous, growing and trading Africa is in all of our interests and its incredible potential will only be realised through a concerted partnership between governments, global institutions and business.
As we prepare to leave the European Union, now is the time for the UK to deepen and strengthen its global partnerships. This week I am looking forward to discussing how we can do that alongside Africa to help deliver important investment and jobs as well as continue to work together to maintain stability and security.
I am proud to be leading this ambitious trip to Africa and to become the first UK Prime Minister in over 30 years to visit Kenya.

Leah Sharibu speaks from Boko Haram captivity, says "I am calling on the president to pity me"

Leah Sharibu, the only student of Government Girls Secondary School, Dapchi, Yobe state, who is still being held captive by Islamic terrorists because she refused to convert to Islam, has spoken from captivity.
The teenager, who has been in captivity since she was kidnapped in February alongside 118 other students, asked President Muhammadu Buhari to save her from her captors.
In an audio obtained by TheCable as a "proof of life", Leah, who has been held captive for 7 months now by a breakaway faction from Boko Haram called Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), pleaded with the government of Nigeria to secure her release. She also pleaded with Nigerians to assist her family at their time of suffering.
Leah Sharibu speaks from Boko Haram captivity, says "I am calling on the president to pity me"
Clad in hijab and sat on a mat, the schoolgirl made her plea in Hausa in a 35 seconds audio, saying:
I am Leah Sharibu, the girl that was abducted in GGSS Dapchi. I am calling on the government and people of goodwill to intervene to get me out of my current situation.
I also plead to the members of the public to help my mother, my father, my younger brother and relatives. Kindly help me out of my predicament. I am begging you to treat me with compassion, I am calling on the government, particularly, the president to pity me and get me out of this serious situation. Thank you.
Leah's schoolmates who were abducted with her were released on March 21, 2018, following what sources said had to do with the intervention of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. 5 of the girls died in captivity. The others who were alive were freed, except for Leah who refused to renounce her faith.
The federal government had said it was making efforts to secure her release.

Arsenal 3-1 West Ham: Unai Emery gets first Gunners win

Unai Emery got his first win as Arsenal manager as the Gunners beat West Ham 3-1 in the Premier League on Saturday.
West Ham may feel their performance deserved a point as they went ahead in the 25th minute with Marko Arnautovic firing home from the edge of the area.
Arsenal were level five minutes later as Nacho Monreal slotted home before West Ham defender Issa Diop (70) saw the ball strike his midriff from an Alexandre Lacazette cross and go in.
Danny Welbeck then sealed the result the second minute of added time, given plenty of space to slot home from a Hector Bellerin delivery as West Ham suffered three opening Premier League defeats for the second season in a row.
Player ratings
Arsenal: Cech (7), Bellerin (6), Mustafi (6), Sokratis (6), Monreal (7), Guendouzi (7), Xhaka (6), Mkhitaryan (6), Ramsey (8), Aubameyang (7), Iwobi (6).
Subs used: Lacazette (7), Torreira (5), Welbeck (6).
West Ham: Fabianski (7), Fredericks (7), Balbuena (6), Diop (5), Masuaku (6), Sanchez (5), Wilshere (6), Anderson (7), Snodgrass (7), Antonio (7), Arnautovic (7).
Subs used: Hernandez (6), Perez (5), Yarmolenko (4).
Man of the match: Aaron Ramsey.
Arsenal thought they had taken an early lead in the 12th minute, but Aaron Ramsey's header was ruled out for offside. The Welshman picked out Bellerin on the right flank, before the defender cut back for Henrikh Mkhitaryan. His effort was saved but Ramsey was there to head in the rebound, but the offside flag was raised.
It was West Ham who made the breakthrough in the 25th minute. Felipe Anderson strode down the field before playing a neat give-and-go with Arnautovic at the top of the box. The striker then took a touch to get the ball past Sokratis and fire home into the bottom corner.
Team news
Mesut Ozil was left out of the Arsenal matchday 18 after suffering an illness with Aaron Ramsey replacing him. West Ham made four changes with Ryan Fredericks, Carlos Sanchez, Issa Diop and Michail Antonio coming into the XI. Jack Wilshere and Lukasz Fabianski also lined up against their former side.
But the lead did not last for long as Arsenal equalised five minutes later. Mkhitaryan picked out a superb run from Bellerin down the right of the area and found Monreal, who had time to take a touch before sweeping past goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
The second half began at a pace, with Fabianksi called into action inside three minutes to keep out a Shkodran Mustafi header before Arnautovic's half-volley from an Anderson cross was saved well by Petr Cech.
It was some bad West Ham luck that saw Arsenal take the lead in the 70th minute. The Hammers failed to clear an Arsenal attack, allowing Ramsey to head the ball back into the area. Lacazette held off Carlos Sanchez before slotting the ball across - intended for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang - but Diop was ahead of the striker to see the ball unwittingly turned home off his midriff.
Substitute Welbeck sealed the victory for Emery in the second minute of added time after Bellerin put the ball into the area through the legs of Arthur Masuaku, allowing the striker - in plenty of space - to slot home and give Arsenal their first three points of the season.
Opta stats
Arsenal are unbeaten in their last 10 Premier League London derbies at the Emirates in, winning seven and drawing three.
West Ham United have lost their first three games of the Premier League season for the third time this decade (also 2010-11 & 2017-18) after doing this just five times between 1920 and 2010.
West Ham attacker Marko Arnautovic has had a hand in 14 Premier League goals in 2018 (eight goals, 6 assists), second only to Liverpool's Mohamed Salah (22).
Issa Diop is only the eighth player to score an own-goal on his Premier League debut and the first to do so for West Ham United in the competition.
Man of the match - Aaron Ramsey
Ramsey was back in the starting XI after being dropped against Chelsea, replacing Mesut Ozil, and it was a solid performance from the Welshman in midfield. He was involved in plenty of the good, passing moves from Arsenal and could even have nabbed a goal if he had not have been offside. Should Ozil return for next weekend's game against Cardiff, Emery will have some tough decisions to make.

Wolves 1-1 Man City: Champions draw after controversial Wolves opener

Wolves impressed as they earned a 1-1 draw with Premier League champions Manchester City on Saturday at Molineux.
After City hit the woodwork twice in the first half, Wolves took the lead in the most controversial fashion as Willy Boly handled Joao Moutinho's fine cross into the far corner (57), the touch not spotted by referee Martin Atkinson or his assistants.
City equalised through Aymeric Laporte's strong header from Ilkay Gundogan's set piece (69), before Sergio Aguero hit the crossbar with a free-kick in the last minute of stoppage time.
Player ratings
Wolves: Patricio (8), Coady (6), Bennett (7), Boly (8), Doherty (6), Neves (6), Moutinho (7), Jonny (7), Jota (7), Jimenez (7), Costa (7).
Subs: Traore (7), Vinagre (NA)
Man City: Ederson (6), Walker (5), Kompany (7), Laporte (7), Mendy (6), Fernandinho (6), David Silva (6), Gundogan(7), Bernardo Silva (6), Aguero (6), Sterling (7).
Subs: Jesus (6), Sane (5), Mahrez (NA)
Man of the match: Willy Boly
The result means City drop points for the first time this season, while Wolves are on two points from their opening three games.
Wolves caused City some problems early on, seeing Raul Jimenez's early close-range strike chalked off correctly for offside, but City eventually got going.
They rattled the woodwork twice in two minutes; Aguero slid a first-time effort against the foot of the post from 12 yards, before Raheem Sterling's fine half-volley from 25 yards was superbly tipped onto the bar by Rui Patricio, an early contender for save of the season.
Team news
Wolves were unchanged following the 2-0 defeat by Leicester, while Man City made two changes after the 6-1 win over Huddersfield. Gabriel Jesus was replaced by Raheem Sterling, and Kyle Walker came in for John Stones.
Aguero then fired straight at Patricio in a good position after Benjamin Mendy's wicked cross was palmed into his path, before a frantic two-minute period in the second half saw Wolves take the lead and leave City feeling hard-done-by.
Ederson brilliantly tipped wide after Douglas Costa had raced through one-on-one on the City goal, but from the resulting short corner, Moutinho's wicked cross was turned home by the hand of Boly.
Seconds later, Boly superbly blocked from David Silva's drive as City looked for an instant reply, and City then saw strong appeals for a penalty turned down by Atkinson as Ruben Neves tripped Silva.
City did eventually respond through Laporte's first goal for the club, a thumping header from six-yards from Gundogan's pinpoint free-kick, and it was nearly 2-1 as Patricio saved brilliantly with his legs from Gabriel Jesus' strong header.
Aguero hit the woodwork for the second time with a 95th-minute free-kick coming off the crossbar, and it stayed one apiece after a frantic and entertaining contest.
Opta stats
Wolves have lost just two of their 28 home games in all competitions under Nuno Espirito Santo (W18 D8 L2).
City have lost just one of their last 30 Premier League games against newly-promoted teams (W22 D7 L1).
City conceded the first goal of a Premier League game for the first time in their last 18 fixtures in the competition, since losing 3-4 to Liverpool on January 14th.
Since the start of last season, City have lost just one of the six Premier League games in which they conceded the first goal (W3 D2 L1).
The managers
Nuno: "The players deserve credit. the way they worked and prepared themselves, we knew it would be tough but we worked for it, played the way and style and shape we believe, and individually we were fantastic."
Nuno Espirito Santo hailed a fantastic Wolves performance
Guardiola: "It was a good game. Too many counter-attacks, but we missed simple passes, and when that happens it is impossible to avoid it. We had chances with the players we had, and it was a good point.
"Of course, Wolves deserve compliments. It's none of my business [whether Boly's goal should bring in VAR]. The Premier League will decide, and when they decide VAR will be here. When I spoke to the referee, I was just making a compliment about their job."

Ghana beats Nigeria in list of most hardworking and most skilled immigrant groups in the US

A new report from Bloomberg ranks Nigerians working in the United States as the eight most hardworking foreigners in the country. Nigerians scored 71.0 percent in the list of the hardest and most skilled immigrant groups in the US which was topped by Ghana with 75.2 percent.
Bulgaria and Kenya were ranked second and third with 74.2 percent and 73.4 percent respectively. Other African countries in the report’s top 10 are Ethiopia (4th), Egypt (5th), and Liberia (9th).
This makes Africans in general the most productive immigrants in the US ahead of those from Mexico and Central America, who constitute more than 70 percent of foreign nationals in the country. Mexico is by far the most common country of origin, but the population of Mexican immigrants in the U.S. (both documented and undocumented) actually fell 6 percent from 2007 to 2015, according to the Pew Research Centre.
The numbers of Salvadorans, Hondurans and Guatemalans in the U.S. continued to grow. “If we want more high-skilled, hardworking, English-speaking, ready-to-integrate immigrants, it looks like the most obvious place to find them is in African countries where English is widely spoken,” Bloomberg journalist Justin Fox, who came up with the report, said.
The report, developed from the 2016 US Census Bureau American Community Survey, ranked Nigeria 8th among the Most-Educated Immigrant Groups in the U.S. Nigeria sandwiched between Australia (7th) and Malaysia (9th). The report put the number of Nigerian legal immigrants in the U.S. at 262,603. According to the report, Kenya, Nigeria, Nepal and Ghana have the highest number of citizens pursuing higher education in the US after Saudi Arabia.
Immigrants from Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana are near the top in both employment-population ratio and higher-education enrollment, it said.

'It is important to let Nigerians understand that NBC does not ban any song' - DG of NBC, Ishaq Midibbo-Kawu

The Director-General of NBC, Ishaq Midibbo-Kawu clarified recent media reports that his commission banned some songs, stating that Nigerians must understand the statutory mandate of the NBC.
“It is important to let Nigerians understand that NBC does not ban any song. I read on social media platforms all the time that NBC banned a song; the commission never bans any song. What NBC does all the time is to remind our licensees that there are certain categorisation of music that are important in broadcasting. If a song is categorised, “Not To Be Broadcast” (NTBB) because of the lyrics of the song, then, we will remind the broadcasters that they cannot be broadcast" he said.
He went on to say
“This is what it is misinterpreted in the social media that we banned the song”.  The director general also refuted the allegation that NBC was “carrying out a Jihad on Nigerian songs” based on a petition by a faith-based human rights organisation, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC).
He stressed that the NBC did not carry out any Jihad, but only responded to a song on a radio station because it had lyrics that were NTBB. He gave an assurance that the Federal Government, through the NBC, would not infringe on artistic liberty or licence.
He, however, reminded artistes and broadcast organisations of their responsibilities to Nigerians and the youths, in particular.
“Last week, I issued a press release to urge Nigerian artistes to have different versions of their songs. They should do a version that can be used for public broadcast space and another version for club usage which can carry all kinds of lyrics that they want. If they want their songs to be broadcast on radio and television in Nigeria, these songs must conform to rules and must be songs that young people can listen to,” he said.
He disclosed that the commission was planning a national dialogue with Nigeria leading artistes on the need to avoid vulgar lyrics and hate speeches in their songs.
“The truth of the matter is that 75 per cent of our population is under the age of 35 while 63 per cent is under the age of 25, so we have a younger population. If you go on Youtube, Olamide song, “Wo” has over 10 million hits. That tells you the kind of influence these young artistes have on all our children in the country. They should help to orientate the young people on the right values. If their songs celebrate sex, violence, the use of drugs, alcohol and fraud, then they are not helping in the molding of young people. We believe that the young generation who listen to them can be guided through the use of their artistic works to play functional social purposes in the society,” he said.
He said the dialogue would focus on the need for the artistes to use their music to propagate positive messages about development.

''Buhari trekking 800 meters today shows he is fit to run for a second term'' - Garba Shehu says

Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu,  says the 800 metres trekking President Buhari embarked upon from the Eid-ground in Daura to his private residence, is an indication of his fitness to seek re-election in 2019. President Buhari decided ro trek back home to acknowledge the cheers from the residents of Daura who filed out in their numbers to cheer him.
According to Garba, the President’s action has refuted Sokoto state governor, Aminu Tambuwal's claim that the president is “too old’’ to continue to rule the country beyond 2019.
“We love President Buhari and that was why we supported him in 2015 unconditionally, and while doing that, we are too sure that he will seek re-election after his first term, but when things are wrong we have to tell him. We still believe in his integrity, patriotism and courage but these are not enough for a leader. We all know that there is a vacuum in the government occasioned by his disposition probably because of his old age or health condition. That is why Nigerians are yearning for younger ones to lead this country'' Tambuwal said in a statement released yesterday
However, Malam Garba Shehu, the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, said the trekking by the president was a response to Tambuwal’s diatribe on the president.
“I think there are two things here; one is to say that the President is responsive to the enormous support and commitment of his own people that had come out in their numbers to see him and he just decided that he couldn’t go on riding in a blacken vehicle and he came out and walked to the distance. The second thing, he is curious that these days, one or two people who are aspiring to be president are campaigning on their youthfulness and good health.
“I think the president has done one thing today – that the issue is not how old one is but how fit is he; how healthy is he. Now that the president has proven his fitness and well-being to continue in office is a settled matter. I think that if people want to campaign against him they should do so on issues that is of significance to Nigerians. The President is fit, he is healthy; he is good to go’’ he said
